Job Opening – Volunteer Position


The Editor of the “Journal of the International Conductors Guild” (the Journal) serves at the request of the ICG Board of Directors and reports directly to the Board, in a timely manner, on all aspects pertaining to the Journal and its publication. Per the ICG Bylaws, the Editor is an ex-officio non-voting member of the ICG Board of Directors.

The Editor of the Journal serves as the catalyst and leader in implementing the mission of the Guild as a leading source of authoritative and up-to-date proprietary information. The Editor will maintain and enhance the International Conductors Guild’s position as a trusted source of high-quality, academic music research content by overseeing the creation and editing of the Journal. The Editor will take a forward-thinking, agile approach to the needs related to all areas of content creation and editing. The Editor sets quality standards and interacts directly with the Executive Director and Board of Directors, as well as any other key constituencies, to define output and communicate production schedules.

The Editor of the Journal is responsible for:

… maintaining the highest quality intellectual content standards for the Journal.
… cultivating and acquiring writers for the Journal.
… maintaining professional relationships with writers for the Journal.
… overseeing the review process for Journal submissions to ensure it is thorough,
fair, and timely.
… upholding the mission and scope of the Journal.
… selecting articles and papers that provide new, original, and important
contributions to knowledge.
… selecting peer reviewers and communicating directly with them on assignments.
… serving as chair of the paper review process.

The Editor of the Journal may also write editorials and solicit manuscripts on special issues, and assign guest editors for these special issues.

The Editor of the Journal will ideally have many of the following qualifications:

… experience managing editorial operations.
… experience managing freelance writers and vendors.
… experience with MS Office Suite with focus on Word and its editing functions.
… experience with Microsoft Publisher and Adobe Acrobat for set-up and soft-proofing
PDFs.
… experience, or degree in English, Journalism, Communications, or related fields.
… familiarity with Chicago Manual of Style, MLA, and APA reference styles.
… flexibility and adaptability in working with volunteers.
… demonstrated qualities of strategic thinking and planning.
… understanding of current strategies for online presentation and publication.
… Doctorate, or ABD, in Music, or closely related field desired.
… successful, published writer of scholarly articles.

Please keep in mind this is an unpaid, volunteer position.

- a writing sample of no less than 1000-1500 words on a topic of your choosing,
