Introduction

6:20 p.m.

A masterpiece of superlatives,
Beethoven described his Missa Solemnis as his "greatest work," for it transcended all boundaries. It premiered in the concert hall in 1823 – shortly before his Ninth Symphony . This incomparable music, demanding the highest level of interpretation, left audiences both overwhelmed and challenged. After very intensive preparation, Beethoven created with this Mass his most personal exploration of his faith. In doing so, he translated an understanding of God shaped by the Enlightenment and humanism into music. He delved deeply into the meaning of the text to reflect his own world consistently and "from the heart." This historically informed performance and recording marks a new milestone in the history of the Gaechinger Cantorey!
