Member Bio Heather Buchman is director of the Hamilton College Orchestra and the Chamber Music program. She also serves as Education and Outreach Conductor for Symphoria, Syracuse’s professional orchestra. With Symphoria she has developed several innovative programs for the Education and Spark series. Buchman’s work in regional arts advocacy was recognized by the Society for New Music in 2013 and Civic Morning Musicals in 2014. In 2012 she received Hamilton College’s Class of 1963 Award for Outstanding Teaching. Buchman was Principal Trombonist of the San Diego Symphony for nine years. She won prizes at the ARD International Music Competition in Munich, Germany and the New York Philharmonic Young Artists Concerto Competition. A longtime student of movement, she recently began studying ballet. She explores the parallels between music and dance in her teaching and performance. Other interests include sound art, as well as the connections between music/sound and other art forms.

Dean Buck

Member Bio Award-winning Conductor Dean Buck has been described by Cleveland Classical as “fearless and firm,” and “precise and confident.” In September 2023, Dean was awarded Second Prize (First Prize was not awarded) at the 2nd International Italian Conducting Competition - Alceo Galliera in Bordighera, Italy. Dean serves as opera conductor at Baldwin Wallace Conservatory. In 2021, he was co-music director for Operas [In Place]: a series of virtual operas that won Opera America’s Award for Digital Excellence in Opera. For this, Buck collaborated with composers Jake Heggie, Nkeiru Okoye, Josh Schmidt, and Griffin Candey, as well as librettists Gene Scheer, Royce Vavrek, David Cote, and Caroline McGraw to premiere works specifically written for virtual performance. He also was Music Director for Nkeiru Okoye’s We’ve Got Our Eye On You which won First Prize at the 2023 National Opera Association Competition. He additionally is the Assistant Conductor and Chorus Master of Cleveland Opera Theater, where he is also Music Director of [NOW]Fest, an annual festival of New Opera Works. Dean previously served as Principal Conductor of the New York City based LoftOpera where he conducted eight productions including their critically acclaimed stagings of Puccini’s La Bohème, Mozart’s Così fan Tutte, and Britten’s The Rape of Lucretia. His work with LoftOpera was praised by the New York Observer as “maintaining a constant, flexible rapport with singers,” and “supporting the voices smoothly.” The New York Times called his conducting “tender and gentle,” as well as “agile and well balanced.” He additionally was Assistant Conductor for Chelsea Opera. Since relocating to Cleveland, Dean has cemented himself in the orchestral scene. He is a frequent Guest Conductor of the Youngstown Symphony Orchestra, and Assistant Conductor of The Cleveland Pops Orchestra, and The Firelands Symphony Orchestra. He regularly appears with the Heights Chamber Orchestra and Suburban Symphony Orchestra, and has worked extensively with the Blue Steak Ensemble, a contemporary chamber group founded by renowned composer Margaret Brouwer. A strong advocate for New Music, Dean has led over 30 premieres of new works. A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Dean holds a Masters Degree in Orchestral Conducting from The Cleveland Institute of Music where he studied with Carl Topilow. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Performance from The New School. Dean has participated in Master Classes with Robert Spano, JoAnn Faletta, Stephan Sanderling, Thomas Wilkins, and Brett Mitchell.

Samantha Burgess

Member Bio San Francisco-based conductor Samantha Burgess is Assistant Conductor for both the Berkeley Symphony and the Berkeley Community Chorus and Orchestra. For the 2024-2025 season, she joins the Oakland Community Women’s Orchestra as Interim Music Director. Previously, she has held the position of Assistant Conductor with the Westerville Symphony (OH), the Galesburg Community Chorus (IL), and the Oxford University Philharmonia (UK). Samantha holds masters’ degrees in Orchestral Conducting and Music Theory from The Ohio State University, where she was Music Director of the Ohio State Community Orchestra and Assistant Conductor for the Ohio State Symphony Orchestra. While at OSU, she was also a graduate teaching assistant in Music Theory and a member of the Cognitive and Systematic Musicology Laboratory. On the podium, Samantha combines conducting with her background in music cognition research to develop innovative, multimedia performances. She has presented her research at the Society for Music Theory Midwest Conference, Future Directions of Music Cognition, and the Oxford Conducting Institute International Conducting Studies Conference. Samantha has conducted in masterclasses and competitions in the USA and abroad—notably in September 2023, when she finished as a semi-finalist in the International Academy and Competition for Orchestral Conducting in Portugal. She has also participated in the George Hurst Conductor’s Course at the Sherborne Summer School of Music, the London Conducting Workshop, the New York Conducting Workshop, and the International Conducting Workshop and Competition in Atlanta, GA.

Naima Burrs

Member Bio Naima Burrs, D.M.A, a violinist and conductor from Richmond, VA, has performed as a section violinist with many ensembles including the Richmond Symphony Orchestra, the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra, the Williamsburg Symphony Orchestra, and the Waterloo Cedar Falls Symphony Orchestra as well as serving as principal second violin with Opera on the James and as concertmaster of Summer Garden Opera. Burrs was selected as a participant in the Conducting Academy of the Domaine Forget International Music Festival (Québec, Canada), where she studied with Maestro Yannick Nézet-Séguin, music director of the Metropolitan Opera House and Philadelphia Orchestra. In January of 2022, Burrs was appointed Music Director of the Petersburg Symphony Orchestra and concluded her tenure after two exciting seasons, in 2024. Burrs has collaborated with prominent solo artists both locally and internationally, including pianist Joanne Kong, clarinetist LeTriel White, violinist Anyango Yarbo-Davenport, and cellist Christoph Wagner. In August 2022, she became a member of the University of Richmond's faculty, where she also currently leads the University of Richmond Symphony Orchestra. In 2023, Burrs made her guest conducting debut with the Richmond Symphony Orchestra, and in the same year, was appointed as the Youth Concert conductor with the National Philharmonic Orchestra, leading eight performances for their educational series at the Music Center at Strathmore in Bethesda, MD. Most recently, Burrs made her conducting debut with the Richmond Ballet, leading the Richmond Symphony in 6 performances for the annual presentation of The Nutcracker. During the 2024-2025 season, Naima will lead the South Bend Symphony Orchestra, the Richmond Symphony Orchestra, and the National Philharmonic in mainstage performances. Naima Burrs serves as the Director of Orchestral Activities at Virginia State University (Petersburg, VA) and has previously contributed to the faculties of Longwood University (Farmville, VA) and Hampden-Sydney College (Hampden Sydney, VA). Burrs holds degrees from Virginia Commonwealth University (B.A. in music), the University of Northern Iowa (M.M. in violin performance), and the Catholic University of America (D.M.A. in instrumental conducting).

Jaime Bustillo

Member Bio Jaime S. Bustillo is a conductor, music educator, and arts leader with over a decade of experience directing band, orchestra, choir, and mariachi ensembles. He has served as a Head Director and Assistant Director of Bands in North Texas, leading ensembles at the middle and secondary levels while overseeing comprehensive fine arts programs in Title I communities. Bustillo’s conducting work has resulted in consistent Division I ratings, sweepstakes, and superior evaluations at UIL Concert and Sightreading and other regional music festivals. In addition to his work with wind ensembles, Jaime has held long-standing appointments as an orchestra and mariachi director, including leading the longest-tenured orchestra program in his school’s history. He has been recognized for his ability to build sustainable music programs, mentor young musicians, and coordinate large-scale district events and clinics. Fluent in English and Spanish, Jaime is an advocate for access, equity, and excellence in music education and performance. He holds a Master of Music Education degree from VanderCook College of Music and a Bachelor of Music with teacher certification from The University of Texas at Arlington.
