Member Bio Israel Herman is in his 21st season as Music Director/Conductor of the Bloomfield Symphony Orchestra and has been the music director for the Lawrenceville Symphony Orchestra, the NJ Intergenerational Orchestra, and opera and guest conducting appearances. He has been Musical Director for musical theater productions for Playful Theater Productions, The Yardley Players, Pennington Players, Pierrot Productions and Maurer Productions On-Stage. He has taught instrumental music in the secondary public schools of Prince Georges County Maryland, the Raritan Valley Community College, the Peddie School, and Mercer County Community College, where he was an instructor in Music Theory, Chamber Ensembles, Music History, Music Appreciation, The Business of Music and Applied Trumpet. He earned a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of MD and has studied at the Peabody Conservatory of Music, Temple University and Bard College. Conducting teachers have included Harold Farberman, Milan Horvat, Robert Page and Acton Ostling, Jr. As a performer, he is an active classical and Dixieland trumpeter, with an avid interest in the performance of early brass and woodwind music on period instruments. Israel shares his love of America's Classic music, Jazz, every Monday at 7 pm on WWFM's JazzOn2 (89.1 HD2) Listen for The Buzz on Dixie, showcasing the best of Dixieland Jazz.

Nathan Hetherington

Member Bio Nathan Hetherington is active in the New York City area as a conductor, composer, teacher, and singer. He has long been a champion of new music in both the jazz and classical worlds and has conducted countless premieres, working closely with composers to bring their works to life with energy and sensitivity. Nathan is deeply engaged with the world of music education, sharing his knowledge and love of music history, music theory, composition, and conducting with students of all ages and levels of musical ability. Nathan Hetherington’s passionate commitment to the training of young orchestral musicians led him to create the Praxis Youth Leadership Orchestra, a radically new type of ensemble focused on mentoring serious young musicians in musical and social leadership. In addition to his work with Praxis, he conducts at the Manhattan School of Music Precollege Division and Summer Music Camp, as well as the Lucy Moses and Special Music Schools. In 2012 he was appointed Orchestra Director at Horace Mann School, where, in addition to his conducting duties in the Middle and Upper Divisions, he teaches music history and steel drums. Nathan received his B.A. in music from Vassar College, where he founded and for two years directed the Mahagonny Ensemble, a student group of singers and instrumentalists specializing in concert and theater works of the last 100 years. Following a year of conducting study with Tonu Kalam at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Nathan completed an M.M. in jazz vocal performance at Manhattan School of Music. In May 2006 he completed a second master’s degree at MSM in classical composition, studying with J. Mark Stambaugh. After graduating, he continued his compositional studies privately with Richard Danielpour and his conducting studies with Roger Nierenberg. Manhattan School of Music Precollege faculty since 2006.

Richard Hickam

Member Bio Richard is focused on music & the arts advancing wholeness, and evidence-based research. He enjoys telling musical stories through sacred, classical, jazz, rock, country, pop, and bluegrass music. Hickam is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, and executive producer and works as the Director of Music & the Arts at AdventHealth. While in college, Richard served as the assistant director of the orchestra under Orlo Gilbert and was the head announcer at classical WSMC, FM 90.5. He graduated from Southern Adventist University in 2000 with a bachelor's degree in music education. He started his career as the instrumental music director at Collegedale Academy from 2000–2011, with his orchestra receiving superior ratings at every festival they entered. During this time, Hickam completed a master's degree in music education at Vandercook College of Music in Chicago in 2005, graduating as class president.
