Nathan Hetherington

Member Bio Nathan Hetherington is active in the New York City area as a conductor, composer, teacher, and singer. He has long been a champion of new music in both the jazz and classical worlds and has conducted countless premieres, working closely with composers to bring their works to life with energy and sensitivity. Nathan is deeply engaged with the world of music education, sharing his knowledge and love of music history, music theory, composition, and conducting with students of all ages and levels of musical ability. Nathan Hetherington’s passionate commitment to the training of young orchestral musicians led him to create the Praxis Youth Leadership Orchestra, a radically new type of ensemble focused on mentoring serious young musicians in musical and social leadership. In addition to his work with Praxis, he conducts at the Manhattan School of Music Precollege Division and Summer Music Camp, as well as the Lucy Moses and Special Music Schools. In 2012 he was appointed Orchestra Director at Horace Mann School, where, in addition to his conducting duties in the Middle and Upper Divisions, he teaches music history and steel drums. Nathan received his B.A. in music from Vassar College, where he founded and for two years directed the Mahagonny Ensemble, a student group of singers and instrumentalists specializing in concert and theater works of the last 100 years. Following a year of conducting study with Tonu Kalam at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Nathan completed an M.M. in jazz vocal performance at Manhattan School of Music. In May 2006 he completed a second master’s degree at MSM in classical composition, studying with J. Mark Stambaugh. After graduating, he continued his compositional studies privately with Richard Danielpour and his conducting studies with Roger Nierenberg. Manhattan School of Music Precollege faculty since 2006.

Member Bio Richard is focused on music & the arts advancing wholeness, and evidence-based research. He enjoys telling musical stories through sacred, classical, jazz, rock, country, pop, and bluegrass music. Hickam is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, and executive producer and works as the Director of Music & the Arts at AdventHealth. While in college, Richard served as the assistant director of the orchestra under Orlo Gilbert and was the head announcer at classical WSMC, FM 90.5. He graduated from Southern Adventist University in 2000 with a bachelor's degree in music education. He started his career as the instrumental music director at Collegedale Academy from 2000–2011, with his orchestra receiving superior ratings at every festival they entered. During this time, Hickam completed a master's degree in music education at Vandercook College of Music in Chicago in 2005, graduating as class president. Member Bio Dr. Terry Hill is a graduate of Brigham Young University where he was honored as the outstanding music education major. He completed his graduate work at the University of Arizona, where he held a teaching assistantship with the orchestra, and was assistant conductor of the university opera while earning a Doctorate in Instrumental Conducting. His career has included work as a conductor, educator and violist. Dr. Hill taught music in the Provo City School District for over twenty-four years, and is presently a popular guest conductor and adjudicator throughout the West. He retired from Utah Valley University where he was Associate Professor of Music and director of orchestral studies. He was also the director of the Utah Valley Youth Symphony. Member Bio Claire Fox Hillard brings a unique flair to the podium, establishing outstanding rapport with musicians and audiences alike. His musical mastery and energy elicits the very best from musicians, inspiring them to perform at peak ability, to which audiences respond with great enthusiasm. The Ukrainian News Service observed that “Both ingeniousness and responsiveness were noticed in Hillard’s interpretation…along with the organic combination of relaxation, strictness and consistency.” The Kansas City Star commented “…Maestro Hillard kept a firm command…we were sent away with the energy and excitement that is Mozart’s legacy.” And recently the Abilene Reporter-News said that “…Hillard and the Philharmonic brought passion and purpose to the music.” Since his European debut in 1994 he has conducted the Karlovarsky symfonicky orchestr and Moravian Philharmonic in the Czech Republic, L’Orchestre Chapelle de Lorraine in Brussels, the Filharmonica “Banatul” and Filharmonica Paul Constantnescu in Romania, the Orquesta Sinfonica de San Pedro Sula in Honduras, the Karkov Philharmonic in Ukraine, the Gdansk Philharmonic in Poland, the National Russian Philharmonic and the Orquestra Sinfonica Caxias do Sul in Brazil. Among the orchestras he has conducted in this country are the Abilene Philharmonic, the West Shore Symphony, the North Arkansas Symphony, the Tupelo Symphony, the Flagstaff Symphony, the Cobb Symphony, the Quad-City Symphony and the Symphony of Southeast Texas. Hillard’s programming is noted for an exciting blend of major symphonic, choral and operatic repertory including a wide variety of American compositions and the premieres of new works. He has received seven ASCAP awards for his innovative programming. He has worked directly with such composers as Aaron Copland, Virgil Thomson, Ulysses Kay, Alvin Singleton, Steven Paulus, Ellen Taffee Zwilich, Samuel Jones and Adolphus Hailstork. Hillard has also collaborated with a wide variety of artists ranging from young classical artists such as violinist Hilary Hahn, Adam Nieman, Stephan Milenkovich, Ransom Wilson, Leon Bates, and Yakov Kassman; to the established artistry of guitarist Elliott Fisk, violinist Itzhak Perlman, and pianist Ruth Laredo; to such popular artists as Ray Charles, actresses Debbie Reynolds, fiddle player Mark O’Connor, and the Billy Taylor Trio. Hillard received training from many notable conductors of our time including James Dixon, Leonard Slatkin, Pierre Boulez, Maurice Abravanel, Jorge Mester and John Barnett. A native of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Hillard began piano and violin studies at an early age and made his conducting debut at the age of 18. At age 25, after earning his masters and doctoral degrees from The University of Iowa, he became one of the youngest conductors ever to be appointed the Music Directorship of a professional orchestra.

Mr. Christopher Hisey

Member Bio Christopher James Hisey has conducted throughout the United States and in Eastern Europe. He made his international debut with the Ruse Philharmonic Orchestra in Ruse, Bulgaria in January of 2001. Since then he returned to Bulgaria to conduct the Pleven Philharmonic Orchestra in January of 2002 and was immediately rebooked for March of 2002 and invited to conduct on an American Music Festival in Sofia, Bulgaria in November of 2003. Future engagements include concerts in Bulgaria and St. Petersburg Russia, and a recording of American music with the Pleven Philharmonic. Mr. Hisey has served as Music Director of the Perrysburg Symphony Chorale, Associate Conductor of the Bowling Green Philharmonia and Opera Theatre Orchestra. He has appeared as guest conductor with the Ohio District II Music Festival, the Lexington String Festival, and the Fairfield County Chorale Summer Sing Program. Mr. Hisey is currently Professor of Conducting and Music Director of the orchestra at Fairfield University. He is also a conductor with the Bridgeport Youth Symphony, and on the string faculties of Greens Farms Academy and the Westport School of Music.

Alvin Ho

Member Bio First prize winner of the prestigious Princess Astrid International Conducting Competition in Trondheim, Norway and a semifinalist of XIII Edition International Conducting Competition Guido Cantelli, Hong Kong born conductor Alvin Ho has received numerous awards and accolades for his conducting. His honors include the Karajan Conducting Fellowship by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra that placed him in residence at the Salzburg Festival. And he was named the Bruno Walter Conducting Fellow at the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music in Santa Cruz, CA. ​​ ​ At home with orchestral works, ballet and opera, Ho conveys a faithful interpretation on the podium, focusing on refined musicality, precision and expressivity. And with his careful preparation, dynamism and charm he readily builds strong relationships with musicians and audiences alike. His captivating character and dedication have led to international engagements with orchestras across Europe, the United Kingdom, and the United States, including the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi, Jena Philharmonic, Luzern Festival Strings, Orchestra Giovanile Luigi Cherubini, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, and Cabrillo Festival Orchestra.​​​​ ​ He currently serves as Assistant Conductor of Florida’s Naples Philharmonic Orchestra. Prior to his position at Naples, he served as Assistant Conductor with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and as Assistant Conductor with the Indiana Opera and Ballet Theatre. ​ The 2025/26 season will see Ho making his debut with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra and the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra, alongside select performances with the Naples Philharmonic that range from standard concert programs to ballet productions. And he continues his close mentorship with Riccardo Muti, who invites him to understudy his performances with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Philadelphia Orchestra, and Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. ​ ​ In addition to his work on the symphonic podium, Ho has enjoyed and is drawn to opportunities to conduct ballet and dance, with a repertoire spanning choreographies from Balanchine, Robbins to Bournonville. He has conducted numerous performances in collaboration with soloists from American Ballet Theatre and Miami City Ballet, Dance Theatre of Harlem, Ballet X, Complexions Ballet, Indiana Ballet Theater, in addition to regular performances with the Naples Ballet. ​ Ho's versatility extends to the operatic stage, where he has collaborated with esteemed singers such as Riccardo Zanellato, Kristinn Sigmundsson and Mark Delavan. He collaborated on seven productions at Indiana Opera, with a notable focus on Wagner’s Parsifal. And after a two-week study with Riccardo Muti, Ho conducted Verdi’s Macbeth in concert form at the Teatro Alighieri as part of the Ravenna Festival. ​ Dedicated to inspire young musicians and music lovers, Ho has worked with numerous youth orchestras including the Naples Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, Royal Conservatoire of Scotland Symphony Orchestra, National Youth Orchestra of China, and Empire State Youth Orchestra. With the Naples Philharmonic he has led and curated programs such as Young Person’s Concerts, Carnegie Hall Link-Up concerts, and thematic youth programs like Trip to the Philharmonic and So Much Drama (retelling of Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream), engaging over 15,000 students per season. He also regularly speaks at Educational Open Rehearsals and initiated the Meet the Conductor program, coaching young musicians in their local schools. ​ ​Ho studied conducting with Arthur Fagen and Bernard Haitink and continues to enjoy a close mentorship with Riccardo Muti. He holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Orchestral Conducting from Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. Dr. Greg Hobbs

Member Bio George Gregory Hobbs is conductor of the Highland Park Chorale, music director of Highland Park Presbyterian Church, and artistic director of the Highlander Concert Series. Comfortable leading musical professionals, students, or amateurs, he is committed to the performance of great music at the highest artistic level. Hobbs’s choral groups have performed in numerous settings throughout the United States and Europe in concert halls, historic cathedrals, and sanctuaries. Dr. Hobbs has guest conducted such noted ensembles as the Eric Ericson Chamber Choir, Voices of Ascension, Canticum Novum, and the New York Virtuoso Singers; and conducted at workshops with the Philadelphia Singers, the New World Symphony, and the Civic Orchestra of Chicago. He has also served on the faculties of the University of North Texas College of Music, Meadows School of the Arts at Southern Methodist University, and Florida International University. His ensembles have performed for Regional and National Conferences of the American Choral Directors Association; and he has led interest sessions at these and other conferences. His educational background includes studies a bachelor’s degree in Choral Music Education at Florida State University where he won the Robert Shaw Conducting Award; and Northwestern University where he was awarded the Doctor of Music degree in Conducting. He conducted performances at Northwestern with the Women’s Chorus, the University Chorus, the award winning University Chorale, and the University Symphony Orchestra; and his dissertation was on the choral-orchestral music of Anton Bruckner.
