David Oertel

Member Bio David Oertel is Music Director and Conductor of the Austin Philharmonic and Starlight Symphony Orchestra. He has worked with many orchestras, musical theatre and opera companies, community bands and orchestras as well as jazz ensembles, and silent film orchestras. ​ Oertel has placed in the top ranks of The American Prize in Orchestral Programming for the past several years.  ​Oertel is co-author with David Daniels and David Rahbee for the sixth edition of the reference book Daniels' Orchestral Music. They are also actively adding content to the associated website: Daniels-Orchestral.com David also partnered with Jonathan Green and co-authored an edition of Green's previously published collection on choral-orchestral works. The new edition is called, "Choral-Orchestral Repertoire: A Conductor's Guide, Omnibus Edition" (2019). ​ Oertel has also appeared as a guest conductor with many orchestras and taught music in the public schools and at universities. As a side note, he is also an avid photographer! Oertel received his undergraduate degree in music education from the University of North Texas, a master's degree from the University of Houston and a doctorate from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Oertel has served as conductor and music director for over 30 musical theatre and opera productions including Don Giovanni, Street Scene, Sweeney Todd, Chicago, West Side Story, Grease, Jesus Christ Superstar, Bat Boy, and Seussical the Musical. ​ Oertel has studied with many conducting luminaries including Robert Linder, David Daniels, Max Rudolf, Kirk Trevor, Samuel Jones, Hans Graf, Niklaus Wyss, Adrian Gnam, Franz Krager, Serge Zehnacher, and David Holley.

Christian Olson

Member Bio Christian Olson is a versatile and innovative conductor who has led stirring performances to critical acclaim. In the summer of 2024 Mr. Olson served as the Assistant Conductor at the 2024 Glimmerglass Festival where he stepped in on short notice to conduct a performance of Pagliacci. In 2025, he is slated to be the AAF Faber Conducting Fellow at the Salzburg Festspiele where he was handpicked by members of the Vienna Philharmonic. Previously, he has served as the Conducting Fellow with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, and as the assistant conductor at both the Chicago Summer Opera and the Indiana University Opera and Ballet Theater. In 2024, Mr. Olson founded the Ver Sacrum Consort in New York City, a chamber ensemble sharing music both old and new. He currently serves as the Assistant Conductor for the Greenwich Village Orchestra. He has participated in the Ferenc Fricsay International Conducting Competition, the Lányi International Conducting Competition, the Lake Como International Conducting Competition, the German Institute of Conducting Competition and was named a Finalist in the Respighi Conducting Competition. He has also been featured in a PBS documentary on the life of Thomas Wilkins. Conductors he has studied under and worked with include Sir Roger Norrington, Franz Welser-Möst, Stéphane Denève, Robert Spano, Nicolás Pasquet, and Carl St. Clair. His primary teachers include Arthur Fagen, Thomas Wilkins, and Dr. Paul C. Phillips. Singers he has performed and worked with include Tara Erraught, Troy Cook, Amber Monroe, Robert Stahley, and Deepa Johnny. In addition to his conducting engagements, Mr. Olson is in demand as a vocal coach of young singers in a wide array of operatic and art song repertoire, and has worked with singers who have gone on to be featured performers at the Tanglewood Music Center, LA Opera, the Opéra national de Paris, the Dutch National Opera, Wolf Trap Opera Company, Opera Philadelphia, the Aspen Summer Music Festival, and Merola, among many others. Mr. Olson studied musicology at the University of North Texas and is currently pursuing his DMA in conducting at Indiana University.

Darryl One

Member Bio Born in Chicago, Illinois, Mr. One began his career in mathematics at Illinois State University and subsequently changed his major to music. He received his undergraduate and masters degrees in composition and later attended Indiana University, completing a masters in conducting. He participated in the Hans Swarowksy Conducting Competition in Vienna and was invited to attend Erich Leinsdorf’s Symposium for Young Conductors in Aspen, Colorado. Mr. One has recorded a number of new American works for the American Symphony Orchestra League’s American Music Project with the Denver Symphony and the Oregon Symphony. He was also one of four conductors invited to conduct the New World Symphony in Miami for the American Repertoire Project, a program designed to highlight young conductors in America. Mr. One became Music Director of the Victoria Symphony Orchestra in Texas in 1995 and Music Director of the Modesto Symphony Orchestra in 2000. During his tenure in Modesto, he doubled the number of concerts the orchestra performed. With innovative combinations of thematic programming, staging, lighting, and concert formats, the orchestra has increased its audience while maintaining a high level of performance. More importantly, Mr. One has raised the artistic level of the orchestra, building it through repertoire and rehearsal techniques. He has built the Victoria Symphony Orchestra in the same way and has been the longest running Music Director in the orchestra's history. Many past members of the orchestra who began their orchestral careers with the VSO have gone on to careers with large regional and major orchestras. Mr. One’s dedication and constant support has allowed the symphony to maintain its mission to enrich, entertain, educate, and inspire through symphonic concerts of the highest possible artistic quality.

Mr. Joseph Ordaz

Member Bio Recognized in the Bay Area as both a conductor, pianist and educator, Joseph Ordaz is currently the Music Director and Conductor of the Mission College Symphony in Santa Clara, California. He is also the Artistic Director and Conductor of the California Concerto Weekend for Amateur Pianists. Other orchestras that he has recently led in performance include the Berlin Sinfonietta, Winchester Orchestra, New Bridge Chamber Orchestra, Ohlone Symphony Orchestra San Francisco State University Symphony and Mercer Symphony. He has worked with many of the top conductors including Gustav Meier, Jorma Panula, John Farrerr, Diane Wittry, Donald Thulean, Adrian Gnam, Daniel Lewis, Marin Alsop, Joann Falletta, Jorge Mester, Kirk Trevor, Harold Farbermann, Mitchell Sardou Klein and William LaRue Jones. He has actively participated in workshops including the London Conductor's Workshop at the Royal Academy of Music, International Conductor's Workshop's in Berlin, Germany; Conductor's Guild Workshop's with the Buffalo Philharmonic and at the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music; California Conducting Institute with the Bakersfield Symphony, "Beyond the Baton" workshop with the Norwalk Symphony and others. Joseph began studying the piano at age eight with Faith Peterman while growing up in Gilroy, CA. He received his Bachelor of Music Degree from San Jose State University and his Master of Music Degree from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. He studied piano with John Delavoryas and Alfred Kanwishcer at SJSU, Milton and Peggy Salkind at SFCM, and Miyoko Lotto in New York. He has also studied harpsichord with Laurette Goldberg at SFCM and Stephen Mello at SJSU. He has performed as piano soloist with the Ft. Worth Chamber Orchestra, San Francisco Concerto Orchestra, Nova Vista Symphony, Mission Chamber Orchestra, Mission College Symphony, South Valley Symphony, San Jose State University Symphony, and New England Symphonic Ensemble, and at the TCU/Cliburn Piano Institute and University of Maryland International Piano Festival. From 1991 - 2001, Mr. Ordaz also performed as a member of the Monterey Symphony and has performed in numerous recitals throughout the Bay Area including solo and chamber music. Mr. Ordaz frequently serves as an adjudicator for competitions including the Stanford University Orchestra Concerto Competition, Young Pianist's Beethoven Competition at SJSU, Nova Vista Symphony Young Artist Competition, Marian Filice Young Pianist Competition at Gavilan College, Musicappasionata at West Chester University and as Coordinator of the Olympiad of the Arts Piano Competition at West Valley College. He has also served on the Board of Directors of Steinway Society - The Bay Area and presented pre-concert lectures for their concert series. Mr. Ordaz has previously taught at Gavilan and Foothill Colleges and for over ten years served as Chair of the Music Department at Mission College in Santa Clara, CA where he has been on the faculty since 1997.
