Philip Bauman

Member Bio Recognized by critics as offering “tremendously sensitive direction” and as being “a gifted and spirited conductor,” Philip Bauman currently serves as Music Director of the Michigan City Messiah and conductor of the Northwest Indiana Symphony Youth Orchestra, the South Suburban College Orchestra and the College of DuPage Chamber Orchestra. Known for his charismatic presence on and off the podium he is frequently hailed for his innovative programs and consistently captivating performances. During his successful 24 year tenure at the La Porte County Symphony, he is credited with significantly raising the orchestra’s artistic level, spearheading a resurgence in the educational programming, more than doubling the audience and expanding the budget three-fold since his arrival in 1994. A passionate advocate for music education, Mr. Bauman has dedicated much of his career to exploring music with young people through educational concerts and work with youth orchestras. With performances locally and internationally, Mr. Bauman has taken members of the Northwest Indiana Youth Symphony Orchestra to Toronto, New York, St. Louis, Cleveland and two educational European tours. In 2018 the Youth Orchestra traveled to Italy and gave performances in Rome, Pisa, Pavia and Cremona. In 2014 the Youth Orchestra toured Salzburg, Vienna and Munich. In 2017, he was a finalist for the music director position with the Carmel Symphony Orchestra (IN). Through his work with Chicago Opera Theater, The Opera Factory, Light Opera Works, da Corneto Opera and the Jarvis Conservatory, Mr. Bauman has gained a reputation as a highly respected conductor of the stage. His 1993 performances of Four Saints in Three Acts with Chicago Opera Theater were unanimously praised by the press. John Von Rhein, music critic of the Chicago Tribune said of his performances, “Philip J. Bauman drew a clean, buoyant and lively reading from the 21- piece orchestra, coordinating stage and pit very well. The final scenes in fact were very moving.” Mr. Bauman made his podium debut with Chicago Opera Theater in 1989, when as assistant conductor, he led the season's final performance of Romeo and Juliet on five minutes’ notice. Since that dramatic and successful debut, he has had a ten-year association with the company and has conducted highly acclaimed performances of Where the Wild Things Are, Carousel, Count Ory, La Traviata, A Waterbird Talk and The Medium with Metropolitan Opera star Mignon Dunn. In 1994, Mr. Bauman once again stepped in on short notice, this time with the Elgin Symphony for the ailing Margaret Hillis; Bauman conducted a subscription concert to much acclaim. In the Chicago, Illinois area he has served as music director and conductor of The Opera Factory, the Chicago Brass Choir, the Lake Shore Symphony Orchestra and the Metropolitan Youth Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Bauman spent 13 years as an associate conductor with the Elgin Symphony where he conducted over 100 performances.

Member Bio Maestro Bay has appeared with seventy-five different orchestras including the National, Chicago, St. Louis, Houston, Dallas, Baltimore, New Jersey, North Carolina, Tucson, West Virginia, Colorado, Hawaii, Sarasota, Fort Worth, Bochum (Germany), Carinthian (Austria), Lithuanian National, and Ecuador National Symphonies, the Minnesota and Algarve (Portugal) Orchestras, the Louisiana, Buffalo, Rhode Island Philharmonics, the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, the Eastman (Postcard from Morocco) and Aspen (The Ballad of Baby Doe) Opera Theaters, and the Theater Chamber Players of the Kennedy Center. Summer music festival appearances have included Aspen and Music in the Mountains (CO), Grant Park and Ravinia (IL), Round Top (TX), OK Mozart (OK) and Skaneateles (NY). Peter is the primary conductor for Ballet Austin. For Austin Opera he has conducted A Streetcar Named Desire, La Traviata, Turandot, and The Marriage of Figaro. Other positions held by Bay have included Music Director of the Erie Philharmonic, Annapolis Symphony Orchestra, Breckenridge Music Festival (CO), Britt Festival Orchestra (OR), and posts with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and Richmond Symphony. Bay and the ASO with pianist Anton Nel released a critically acclaimed Bridge CD of Edward Burlingame Hill’s music. With the Richmond Symphony he recorded the US premiere of Britten’s The Sword in the Stone for Opus One Records, and with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra Voices, featuring the percussion ensemble NEXUS. In 1994, he was one of two conductors selected to participate in the Leonard Bernstein American Conductors Program. He was the first prize winner of the 1980 Baltimore Symphony Orchestra Young Conductors Competition and a prize winner of the 1987 Leopold Stokowski Competition sponsored by the American Symphony Orchestra. In July 2012 he appeared in Solo Symphony, a choreographic work created for him by Allison Orr of Forklift Danceworks. Peter is married to soprano Mela Dailey and they have a son Colin.

Kenneth Bean

Member Bio Kenneth T. Bean began seriously studying music as a high school student when he attended the Baltimore School for the Arts. He matriculated to Oberlin Conservatory where he earned a Bachelor of Music in Trumpet Performance, following which he completed a Master of Music Education from Jackson State University. As a trumpeter, Kenneth has enjoyed a thriving freelance career, playing with such ensembles as Mannheim Steamroller, Sphinx Symphony Orchestra, Soulful Symphony Orchestra, Black Pearl Chamber Orchestra and Mississippi Symphony Orchestra. He can be heard on recordings with Symphony in C, the Monocacy Chamber Orchestra, and hip-hop artist Thee Phantom & the Illharmonic Orchestra. Following a desire to pass on the gift of music, Kenneth has worked with a number of music education organizations, including Play on, Philly!, Settlement Music School and the School District of Philadelphia. He has also taught at summer festivals, such as Luzerne Music Center and the Premier Orchestral Institute of the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra. For the past few summers, he has taught trumpet and conducted various ensembles at Symphony in C Summer Camp and Kinhaven Music School. He currently holds the position of Associate Director/Program Director of the Primavera Fund, a Philadelphia based charitable trust, whose mission is to identify, mentor and underwrite the artistic endeavors of young musicians whose talent surpasses their financial means. In recent years, Kenneth has been most fortunate to engage his passion for conducting. He held the position of Music Director/Conductor of the Junior String Philharmonic of the Lehigh Valley from 2011-2015. In January of 2016 he was appointed Music Director/Conductor of the Young People's Philharmonic of the Lehigh Valley. He also has served as the Conductor of the Symphony in C Youth Orchestra since its inception in 2014. In the 2015-16 season, he served as Associate Conductor of the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra. In the fall of 2016, he will begin his appointment as Director/Conductor of the newly launched Philadelphia Young Musicians Orchestra. In November 2016, Kenneth travelled to Thessaloniki Greece to participate in the Felix Mendelssohn Conducting Competition, which was supported in part by a Sphinx MPower Artist grant. Kenny currently lives in West Philadelphia with his wife, Molly Bidlack.

Erin Beave

Member Bio Erin has served as the Director of Bands at Hastings High School since 2004, where he leads two concert bands, two jazz bands, coaches orchestral winds and percussion, and oversees the athletic bands. He holds a Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and a Master of Music with an emphasis in Conducting from Kansas State University. Erin has served as a board member for the Nebraska State Bandmasters Association. He held a Graduate Teaching Assistantship while at Kansas State University, and he previously taught in the McCook and Sutton Public School Districts. Erin is active as a clinician, adjudicator, and performer. He has served as the guest clinician for various honor bands. Erin has also led both the Kearney Symphony brass section and the 43rd Army Band's Concert Brass Ensemble. He currently plays Principal Trumpet with the Kearney Symphony Orchestra, and recently retired as Principal Trumpet of the 43rd Army Band in Lincoln, NE. Erin is also a member of the Cathedral Brass Quintet and the Hastings Symphony Orchestra. He has appeared as a soloist with the 43rd Army Band and the Hastings Symphony Orchestra. Erin is a member of the National Band Association, the Nebraska Music Educators Association, the Nebraska State Bandmasters Association, the National Association for Music Education, the International Trumpet Guild, and the International Conductors Guild.

Michael Bednarsky

Member Bio Michael Bednarsky is an American orchestral conductor of classical and contemporary music. Bednarsky conducts the Boston Conservatory Conductors' Orchestra and is the Conducting Assistant at the Orchestra of Indian Hill. Bednarsky was the Music Director of the Buckeye Philharmonic Orchestra (Columbus, OH) during the 2017-2018 season. Prior to this appointment, Bednarsky served as the orchestra’s Associate Conductor from 2015-2017. During this tenure, Bednarsky led the orchestra through a period of substantial growth. As an advocate of new music, Bednarsky organized a campaign to fund the orchestra’s first-ever commission. This successful campaign resulted in the completion of Echoes of Scarlet by Jason Wyse (Instructor of Music, Malone University). Bednarsky has recently collaborated with composition students at Boston Conservatory and the Wintergreen Music Festival & Academy to premiere works with various instrumentations. As a music educator, Bednarsky has worked with numerous middle and high school bands as a guest clinician for contest preparations and summer music camps. Bednarsky is currently a Master’s candidate at The Boston Conservatory at Berklee, where he is under the mentorship of Maestro Bruce Hangen. He has also studied with Maestro Victor Yampolsky at the Wintergreen Music Festival & Academy. He is a graduate of The Ohio State University, where he received the Kinnan Music Education Award and Excellence in Ensembles and Conducting Award.

Member Bio Jessica Bejarano currently serves as music director and conductor of the San Francisco Civic Symphony! Jessica also serves as music director at San Francisco University High School where she conducts the orchestral and choral programs. Jessica received her Master of Arts in Conducting from the University of California Davis; Bachelor of Music in Music Education from the University of Wyoming; Associates of Fine Arts in Music Education from Casper College. During the Summer of 2007, Jessica attended the International Academy of Advanced Conducting in Saint Petersburg, Russia where she received “Honorable Mention” for her performance with the Classical Symphony Orchestra of Saint Petersburg, Russia. Jessica was invited back by the Academy (IAAC) in 2008 to continue her studies with Maestro Leonid Korchmar and to conduct a performance with the Chamber String Orchestra of Urbino in Urbino, Italy. During the same Summer, she also attended the International Institute for Conductors in Bacau, Romania where she conducted the Philharmonic Orchestra “Mihail Jora” of Bacau in two separate performances. In September 2010, Jessica was one of fifteen conductors selected from around the world to study with famed Maestro Jorma Panula and conduct in rehearsal and performance the Ruse National Philharmonic in Ruse, Bulgaria. During her time with the Bulgarian National Philharmonic Jessica worked closely with musicians and soloists to create a vibrant and exciting performance. Since her appearance with the orchestra and work with Maestro Panula, Jessica is now a welcomed guest conductor every year. In June 2012, Jessica was invited to the Conductors’ Guild Conducting Mastercourse with Maestra Marin Alsop and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. One month later, in July, Jessica was selected to participate in the International Conductors Masterclass in San Lorenzo De Escorial, Spain. During her time in Spain she worked closely with Maestro Jorma Panula and conducted the Camerata Antonio Soler Orchestra in performance. In August, after Spain, Jessica was accepted into the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music with Maestra Marin Alsop and Maestro Gustav Meier in Santa Cruz, California. Just recently in June 2017, Jessica was one of two selected conductors to guest conduct the Falcon Symphony Orchestra in Coro, Venezuela. During her time in Venezuela she was also a guest conductor with the famed El Systema music education program where she worked with music students of various youth orchestras. This July and August 2017, Jessica was one of 16 conductors selected to attend the International Conducting Institute in Kromeritz, Czech Republic. During her time there Jessica worked closely with Maestros Kirk Trevor and Neil Varon and conducted the Bohuslav Martinu Philharmonic Orchestra. Eric Bell

Member Bio Captain Eric J. “Morecow” Bell is a native of Washington, Illinois. He was commissioned in 2002 and designated a Naval Flight Officer (NFO) in 2004. He holds a Bachelor of Music in Music Theory from the University of Michigan, an Executive Master of Business Administration from the Naval Postgraduate School, and a Master of Arts (with distinction) in National Security and Strategic Studies from the U.S. Naval War College (USNWC). Additionally, he is a graduate of the Carrier Airborne Early Warning Weapons School (CAEWWS) and U.S. Navy Fighter Weapons School (TOPGUN). Captain Bell’s sea assignments include the VAW-113 Black Eagles, VAW-116 Sun Kings, and VAW-112 Golden Hawks; he returned to the Black Eagles for their E-2D Advanced Hawkeye transition and operational command. He has deployed aboard the USS RONALD REAGAN (CVN 76), USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN (CVN 72), USS JOHN C. STENNIS (CVN 74), and USS CARL VINSON (CVN 70) in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM, Operation ENDURING FREEDOM, and other FIFTH and SEVENTH Fleet operations. Additionally, he completed assignments as Joint Electronic Warfare Officer, supporting U.S. Army I Corps during Exercise Talisman Saber, and U.S. Senior Naval Controller, supporting the Republic of Korea / U.S. Combined Forces Command during Exercise Key Resolve. Captain Bell’s shore assignments include the Hawkeye Weapons & Tactics Unit, SNWC Halsey Bravo Advanced Research Project, and Integrated Warfare Directorate of the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations (OPNAV N9I). At OPNAV N9I, he served as the Warfare Programs Branch Head, acquired subspecialties in both Requirements Management and Financial Management, and led the Navy’s Warfighting Council in developing a comprehensive investment and divestment plan, totaling more than $1 trillion across the Future Years Defense Plan. Captain Bell has logged more than 2,500 flight hours in 14 different aircraft and is qualified in the E-2D Advanced Hawkeye and F/A-18F Super Hornet. His personal awards include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Strike / Flight Air Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (four awards), Navy Achievement Medal (four awards), and Army Achievement Medal.
