Dr. Paolo Bellomia

Member Bio Professor and head of the orchestral conducting department at Université de Montréal, Paolo Bellomia performs as guest conductor all over the world. His vast repertoire extends from Mozart to various contemporary works. From 1994 untill 1999, Bellomia lived between Amsterdam and New York. During this time he followed Peter Eötvös in a Europe tour where he performed many works of the contemporary repertoire. Paolo Bellomia studied at the University of Montréal. He obtained a Master’s degree in composition, with André Prévost and a Doctorate in orchestral conducting with Loraine Vaillancourt. Between 1991 and 1998, he was the conductor and artistic director of L’Ensemble du Jeu présent (Ottawa), with which he performed many works from young composers. In 2003, he was named artistic director of the Ensemble Fusion (Ottawa). In 2005, he was the director of l’Orchestre Symphonique Léonardo Da Vinci, which became in 2008 Orchestre 21. Paolo Bellomia now shares the orchestral conducting position of Orchestre 21 with Ron Di Lauro. He has been honored several times with grants from FCAR, le Conseil des arts du Canada, Le Conseil des arts de l’Ontario and Le Conseil des Arts et lettres du Québec. Paolo Bellomia has had the opportunity to refine his performance with Michael Charry, Harold Farberman, Pierre Boulez et Carlo-Maria Giulini.

Kaleb Benda

Member Bio American conductor Kaleb Benda is widely regarded for his adeptness and passion. He has extensively performed music ranging from renowned symphonic works and concerti to fresh, contemporary pieces. For these performances, he has collaborated with a gamut of ensembles and mediums including orchestras, opera companies, choirs, and concert bands. Kaleb Benda currently serves as Artistic Director and Conductor of the Oklahoma Chamber Symphony, Assistant Conductor of the Enid Symphony Orchestra, and Music Director of the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma Concert Band. Having conducted across the United States and in Hungary, Kaleb Benda primarily performs with the Oklahoma Chamber Symphony, a chamber orchestra which he founded in 2019. His multi-faceted career also includes regular appearances with the annual Cool Classics Series where he conducts the OK Strings ensemble, as Music Director of the Mount St. Mary Instrumental Music Ensemble, and as Music Director of the St. Stephen’s Choir. Other conducting positions include serving as Assistant Conductor for the University of Central Oklahoma’s 2019 operatic production of Così fan tutte, and guest conducting engagements with the Medomak Symphony Orchestra, the Centennial (TX) Symphony Orchestra, and the University of North Texas Wind Symphony. Consecutively in 2016, 2017, and 2018, Kaleb Benda was named a finalist for The American Prize in the discipline of conducting. Other accolades include attending masterclasses and workshops across the country and abroad. In 2018 Benda attended the 15th annual Danube Conducting Masterclass and Workshop in Budapest, Hungary. In the same year he attended the inaugural Fort Worth Symphony Orchestral Conducting Workshop where he studied with Miguel Harth-Bedoya. Other recent appearances include the 21st annual conductor's retreat at Medomak in 2017, where he learned from regarded conductor Kenneth Kiesler. Additional masterclasses he has attended include the UNT Conductors’ Collegium, the OCU Conducting Symposium, and auditing the International Conductors Workshop and Festival. He is currently a student of Alexander Mickelthwate. Kaleb Benda holds a degree in Music Education from the University of North Texas, where he was also able to study abroad in Hungary. Kaleb Benda received his Master of Music in Conducting degree from the Bass School of Music at Oklahoma City University where he was awarded the Graduate Student Talent Scholarship and studied with esteemed pedagogues and conductors, Dr. Matthew Mailman and Jeffrey Grogan. Positions he held at OCU include Graduate Conductor for the Symphony Orchestra, Wind Philharmonic, and University Chorale Choir. He was also the Assistant Conductor to the Oklahoma City University Musical and Opera Companies for their productions of Hairspray, and the Oklahoma premier of the opera Dark Sisters, for which the composer, Nico Muhly, spent a residency.

Julien Benichou

Member Bio Hailed as “one of the most interesting and accomplished conductors of his generation,” Julien Benichou is noted for his blend of flexibility and control, inspiring musicality and incredibly infectious energy. Benichou is Music Director for the Mid-Atlantic Symphony Orchestra (MSO), Principal Conductor of the Washington Opera Society, Music Director of the Chesapeake Youth Symphony Orchestra (CYSO), and the Southern Maryland Youth Symphony Orchestra (SMYOC). He made his debut with the New York City Ballet, in Balanchine’s The Nutcracker, and returned to Carnegie Hall, in a concert featuring Robert Redford and Vice-President Al Gore. As Music Director of the MSO for the last 12 seasons, Benichou has greatly raised the profile of the ensemble, attracting premier artists, as well as expanding the orchestra’s season. This year, he collaborates with Stefan Jackiw, Virgil Boutellis-Taft, Kurt Nikkanen, Brandie Sutton and Leon Fleisher. Previous seasons have included concerts with Kevin Short, Lester Lynch, Arnaud Sussmann and Tine Thing Helseth. Benichou has also found success conducting operatic productions. Most recently, as principal conductor of Washington Opera Society, he conducted La Cenerentola at the French Embassy, and L’elisir d’amore at the Residence of the Ambassador to Colombia. This June, he will conduct their production of Carmen with Jonathan Tetelman as Don José. He has conducted, to great critical acclaim, fully staged performances of Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess with the Morgan State University Choir and Opera Workshop. In September of 2016 he conducted the premiere performance of James Lee’s Mother’s Lament with the Morgan State University Choir. Benichou has also garnered acclaim as guest conductor at the Annapolis Symphony, Newark Symphony, Ballet Theatre of Maryland, Baltimore Concert Opera, Baltimore Symphony/Mobtown Modern Synchronicity projects, Orquestra Sinfonica do Parana in Curitaba, Brazil, the St. Petersburg State Symphony in Russia, the Maison Symphonique de Montreal in Canada, and the Siberian State Symphony in Krasnoyarsk, Russia, where he will return next season. Other return engagements will include a collaboration with Tim Janis at Carnegie Hall. An avid supporter of new music, Benichou collaborated with many composers and was the Principal Conductor of the Towson New Music Ensemble for ten seasons. He also served as principal conductor for the Mobtown Modern Ensemble. Also a composer, Benichou has received commissions for theater, film and concert music; most recently from the Siberian State Symphony Orchestra. Benichou has taken the Chesapeake Youth Orchestra on six different European tours, performing side-by-side concerts with the Orchestre des Jeunes de Montréal and the St. Petersburg State Symphony. Member Bio Currently serving as an Assistant Conductor at the Riverside Philharmonic, Conducting Fellow at the Long Beach Symphony and an Associate Conductor at the Westside Youth Orchestra. Pola Benke's ascent in the world of conducting exemplifies the harmonious blend of talent, dedication, and a relentless pursuit of musical excellence. Her journey as a conductor set sail four years ago when she enrolled in a conducting program under the guidance of Christopher Russell at Azusa Pacific University. Concurrently, she took private lessons with Jonathon Heyward. To further refine her skills, she also studied under the mentorship of Tomasz Golka. Pola’s talent was acknowledged early on when she was selected for the summer program with Maestro Neeme Järvi. She was invited to the Dartington Music Festival in England to serve as a Fellow Conductor where she worked under the guidance of Sian Edwards. Noteworthy among her recent accomplishments is her invitation to the esteemed Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music, where she had the privilege of collaborating with Cristian Macelaru. As an accomplished cellist, Pola Benke understands the intricacies of musical performance and how to communicate with musicians to achieve the desired artistic interpretation. Her background as a musician has also given her the ability to analyze and interpret scores with a high level of detail, enabling her to lead ensembles with precision and nuance. This knowledge and experience are invaluable assets in the craft of conducting and allow her to bring a unique perspective to her work as a conductor. Evan Bennett

Member Bio Evan Bennett is a conductor, composer, oboist, and pianist who has won awards in composition and as a solo oboist. At nineteen he began playing professionally with the Utah Symphony Orchestra. As a conductor, he was formerly Music Director of the Middlebury College Orchestra and Lowell Opera. He has also conducted the Juventas Ensemble, Magnitude6, Meridian Arts Ensemble, Da Capo Chamber Players, Princeton University Orchestra, Middlebury Chamber Soloists, and other ensembles at venues such as Carnegie Hall and Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center. Bennett has conducted the premieres of over 15 new works. His compositions have been premiered by the Brodsky String Quartet, Gemini, Cardinal Brass Quintet, Royal Academy Symphony Orchestra, and a broadcast over BBC Radio. Awards include the Yehudi Menuhin Prize and a Naumburg fellowship. In addition to his musical activities, he has been a guest lecturer and panelist on music education in the US and internationally, including for the Korean government as part of its national KIGA program and at Tufts University. A former faculty member of New England Conservatory and Middlebury College, he was also Executive Director of the NEC at Walnut Hill conservatory program. He currently is a faculty member at Northeastern University where he conducts the Northeastern University Symphony Orchestra and teaches chamber music, a faculty member at the Longy School of Music at Bard College in the Composition and Theory Department, and is Music Director of the Middlebury College Orchestra. He holds degrees from Harvard, the Juilliard School, and Princeton University.

Member Bio Edward Benyas is Professor of Oboe and Conducting at SIU Carbondale, Music Director of the Southern Illinois Symphony, the New Chicago Chamber Orchestra—with which he made his European conducting debut—and founder and Artistic Director of the Southern Illinois Music Festival, which presents three-dozen concerts annually each June. Mr. Benyas previously served as Music Director of the Skokie Valley Symphony, the North Shore Chamber Orchestra, Symphony Fantastique! and the Southern Illinois Youth Orchestra. He appeared on national television leading a chorus and orchestra comprised of musicians from throughout Illinois during funeral services for the late Senator Paul Simon. Under his leadership, the Southern Illinois Symphony was named Orchestra of the Year, and in 2005 he was named Conductor of the Year, by the Illinois Council of Orchestras. A student of Ray Still, Robert Morgan and Victor Yampolsky, Mr. Benyas holds a graduate degree in Orchestral Conducting and Oboe Performance from Northwestern University, as well as Bachelor and Juris Doctor degrees from the University of Michigan. He also studied at the Pierre Monteux School for Conductors under the late Charles Bruck, and at the International Workshop for Opera Conductors with the late Georg Tintner. Mr. Benyas has guest-conducted orchestras in California, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Missouri, Georgia, Louisiana, Virginia, Maine, North Dakota, Washington, Canada, Germany, Italy, Bulgaria and the Czech Republic. Important past conducting engagements include conducting La Bohème at the Silesian State Opera, guest conducting the New Symphony Orchestra of Sofia, Bulgaria, the Des Moines Metro Opera Orchestra and Apprentice Artists, the Illinois Chamber Symphony, the Northwestern University Chamber Orchestra, the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, and directing the Southern Illinois Symphony Orchestra before the President and an audience of 10,000.

Member Bio Jesus Manuel Berard was born in Havana, Cuba and raised in New York City. His conducting teachers include Otto-Werner Mueller (Yale), Harold Farberman (Conductors Institute at Bard), David Epstein (M.I.T.), and Piero Bellugi and Frank Battisti (New England Conservatory). He studied piano with Carol Rankin, Carolyn Kleiner and Thomas Vogelman, and voice (bass-baritone) with Marian Thompson, Margarethe Mueller, George Fiore and Lorna Cooke DeVaron. Studies in composition, theory and analysis include Donald Martino and Robert Cogan at the New England Conservatory of Music (B.M., M.M.), and Patricia Carpenter, Jonathan Kramer and Fred Lerdahl at Columbia University (M.A., M.Phil., Ph.D.), for which he wrote his dissertation on the music of Gustav Mahler. Conducting and composition masterclasses include Larry Rachleff, Carl St. Clair, Pierre Boulez, Aaron Copland and Roger Sessions. A passionate, dynamic and seasoned performer, teacher and scholar, Berard has conducted and taught at the New England Conservatory, Columbia University, American University, Hofstra University and Connecticut College.
