8:30       Welcome by John Farrer and Jesse Rosen

9:00       Facilitation by Delta David Gier covering the following topics:

  • How do conductors continue to learn and improve their craft after the completion of formal education?
  • How to navigate relationships with:
    • Management
    • Musicians
    • Artistic staff
    • Navigating orchestral politics
  • How do conductors stay excited about their craft and engaged in artistry (i.e. avoid burnout)?
  • What specific actions can conductors take to catalyze their career if it is stalled or ailing?
  • How to balance a variety of activities to keep their careers vibrant and artistically fulfilling.
  • In what ways must mid-career conductors adapt to current career demands that keep them competitive in the  jobs market?
  • How can conductors refresh themselves at the mid-career phase?

11:00     Panel discussion (last hour of the seminar) with representatives ranging from ED’s of orchestras, artist management, and the opera world to coalesce themes presented in seminar. Panel will include:
