BEETHOVEN Conducting Workshop

This unique workshop addresses the challenges of conducting Beethoven’s orchestral music. Each day begins with presentations from William Kinderman. Participants will read his recent study Beethoven: A Political Artist in Revolutionary Times prior to the workshop.

Selected conductors will receive generous podium time in rehearsal and performance of selected movements and works, including:

REPERTOIRE - TBA

The workshop faculty guidance will lead to a public performance where participants will demonstrate their insight in realizing the compositions. In this workshop, practical mastery is blended with awareness of the cultural values of Beethoven’s legacy. Inclusion of the Fifth Symphony and the Leonore Overture No. 3 provides a context for engagement with the dramatic and political implications of this music.

Conductors will not find a more thorough Beethoven experience.

CONDUCTORS -
Ten (10) participating conductors will be selected from the completed and submitted applications.
Ten (10) or more auditor conductors will participate in this workshop and will receive limited podium time.
All participating conductors are expected to attend all sessions.

ORCHESTRA -
UCLA Philharmonia is the flagship orchestra of the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music and is recognized as one of the finest training orchestras in Southern CA. The orchestra will include current UCLA students and alumni.

PARTICIPANT TRANSPORTATION AND HOUSING -
Transportation and housing will be the responsibility of the selected conductors.
There may be the possibility of on-campus housing - Details TBA

Rehearsals, lectures, and other sessions and the performance will take place
