Member Bio Gracie Carrillo is a Music Educator and Conductor. She is an advocate for supporting arts in public schools, communities, and remotely. She travels frequently with her ensembles where they compete, engage in workshops, and learn about the many facets of the music industry. Her previous work has proven to champion a district grant to sponsor 60+ students to fly from California to New York and learn from Broadway artists, mock auditions, industry musicians, and creative thinkers. Gracie's expertise ranges from Mariachi, professional Orchestra, Parade Band, Marching Band, Pep Band, Concert Band, Wind Ensemble, Musical Pit, Choir, Guitar, Piano, Colorguard, Jazz Band, and ensemble competion and workshops. Gracie frequently attends workshops and is granted conducting fellowships. She has travled nationally and Internationally. She has had the opportunity to conduct ensembles such as:The San Francisco Philharmonic (San Francisco, CA), Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra (Sofia, Bulgaria), Arizona State University chamber winds (Tempe, Arizona), and currently accepted as a fellow to conduct in London (UK) via the Dirigierakademie workshop. Gracie also prioritizes advocating for the arts in her community through yearly recruitment and retainment strategies, fundraising, crowdfunding, grant writing, marketing, and promotions. She is also part of her districts team to create profeciency scales via the music education secondary department, an engagement to close the gap in recuritment between feeder schools and student learning. All aspects in Gracie's line of work have allowed growth in her music program in the past years. A success which is enabled by Gracie's drive to support foundation via student interest and retainment, campus culture, and administration support. Gracie holds a Bachelor of Music in Composition from California State University of Stanislaus, and holds a Master of Arts in Music Business from Berklee College of Music.

Member Bio Brad Everett Cawyer, recently completing three seasons as Music Director of the Mesquite Symphony Orchestra, has established himself internationally as a keen interpreter of a broad scope of orchestral and operatic repertoire. Living for many years in Europe, his thorough absorption of that continent's classical technique of conducting highlights the deep-founded musicianship so visible in his clear and engaging style. Cawyer’s affable approach to working with orchestras inspires an atmosphere uplifting to performers and audience alike. Among other engagements in 2016-17, Cawyer returns to work with Dallas’ Avant Chamber Ballet for their reprise of Dobson’s Alice in Wonderland, During the 2015-16 season, Cawyer made his Pacific Northwest debut with Rainier Symphony. In recent seasons he has assisted Rossen Milanov for subscription concerts of the Princeton Symphony Orchestra and Symphony in C, conducted and taught masterclasses at the Mongolia State College of Music and Dance, and assisted the Houston Symphony Orchestra in a semi-staged production of Wozzeck, released by Naxos in January 2017. Additional conducting engagements have included appearances with the Academic Symphony Orchestra of the Saint Petersburg Philharmonic, the St. Petersburg Chamber Philharmonic (Russia), and the Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra (Texas), and he served for three years on the faculty of Russian Opera Workshop, a summer program for vocalists held annually in Philadelphia. Until recently Cawyer was conducting predominately in Russia, his engagements including opera productions and premieres of new works for ensemble and for chamber orchestra. In this area he has developed strong ties with composers hailing from all corners of the globe. Artistic Director for St. Petersburg’s Contemporary East / West International Music Festival and a past conductor of the SoundWays New Music Ensemble, Cawyer earned public acclaim when he was invited to conduct the world premiere of Mehdi Hosseini’s Concerto for String Quartet with the St. Petersburg Philharmonic. Even while still an undergraduate student Cawyer demonstrated his skill as an orchestra builder, establishing the Texas A&M University Orchestra. During the three years leading this orchestra, he built the ensemble from twenty to more than sixty musicians. A major achievement of his work with this orchestra was the US premiere of the oratorio Let There Be Joy by present-day Russian composer Konstantin Zhigulin. In addition to his degree from the St. Petersburg Conservatory, where he studied with Hans Swarowsky’s prized pupil Alexander Alexeev, Cawyer has participated in workshops and masterclasses with JoAnn Falletta, Victor Yampolsky, Jorge Mester, Kirk Trevor, Jorma Panula, Jaques Lacombe, David Hayes, Rossen Milanov, Markus Lehtinen, Kenneth Kiesler, and Gennady Rozhdestvensky, conducting orchestras across America, Europe and Asia.

Mr. Mark Cedel

Member Bio Mark Cedel brings a wealth of professional experience to his position as Director of Orchestral Activities. The 2018-19 academic year marks his 25th year at UGA. Prior to his appointment at UGA, he was Associate Conductor of the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra. In his four seasons with that orchestra, he conducted over 200 performances; appearing on every series offered by the orchestra. Before joining the Charlotte Symphony, Cedel was Principal Viola and Assistant Conductor of the Charleston (SC) Symphony Orchestra for nine years. While in Charleston, he served for two seasons as that orchestra's Acting Music Director. From 1986-1990, he was a member of the artist faculty at the Brevard Music Center and was principal conductor of the Brevard Repertory Training Program. In addition to directing orchestral activities at UGA, Cedel served as professor of viola from 1994-2002. During that period he performed, toured, and recorded regularly as extra/substitue viola with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, including its northeast tour with concerts in Carnegie Hall. He returned to teaching viola for the 2009-2010 academic year, while a seach was conducted to fill the position. Cedel has been associated with many orchestras in the southeast. This includes Principal Viola of the South Carolina Chamber Orchestra and the Guest Principal Viola of the Savannah Symphony, and orchestras in Augusta, Macon, and Jacksonville. Upon graduation, Cedel accepted the position of Distinguished Visiting Professor at the Universidade Federale do Rio Grande do Norte in Brasil. There he was Principal Viola of the Orquestra da Camera UFRN and violist for the Quarteto UFRN, which made several national tours. Cedel frequently returns to Brasil to participate in festivals and guest conduct. Cedel earned a bachelor of music degree in viola performance from the Curtis Institute of Music where he was a student of Joseph dePasquale, and studied chamber music with members of the Guarneri Quartet, Budapest Quartet and Beaux Arts Trio. He holds a master of music degree in conducting from the North Carolina School of the Arts.

Member Bio Helen H. Cha-Pyo is currently in her fourth season as the Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Wharton Institute for the Performing Arts (WIPA). Under her artistic leadership, WIPA serves over 1,400 students from 13 different counties of New Jersey through a range of classes at Wharton Performing Arts School, 15 performing ensembles at New Jersey Youth Symphony and Paterson Music Project, an El Sistema-inspired program serving over 400 children in the city of Paterson, NJ. As principal conductor of NJYS Youth Symphony, she has led the orchestra in prestigious concert halls including Richardson Auditorium, NJ State Theatre, Union County Performing Arts Center, Kasser Theater and New Jersey Performing Arts Center, including the 40th anniversary performance of Carmina Burana with six local high school choruses. For 16 years as Music Director and Conductor of the Empire State Youth Orchestra (NY), Ms. Cha-Pyo inspired hundreds of young musicians to perform at the highest levels, resulting in Empire State Youth Orchestras being recognized as one of the nation’s premier music organizations for youth. Ms. Cha-Pyo regularly programmed a wide range of music embracing many different cultures. Her vision resulted in three prestigious ASCAP awards and a $100,000 grant to partially fund a music festival that commissioned nine works, one for each ESYO ensemble. She conducted the orchestra in outstanding concert halls including Troy Savings Bank Music Hall, Zankel Hall, EMPAC, Tanglewood’s Ozawa Hall, and Carnegie Hall. She led the orchestra on three international tours: to Europe in 2008, China and South Korea in 2012, and Portugal in 2016. Ms. Cha-Pyo’s vision was instrumental in the founding of ESYO CHIME in 2015, a music education program dedicated to serving underprivileged youth in Schenectady and Troy, NY. In 2018, ESYO established the Helen Cha-Pyo Golden Baton Award and Scholarships for students who embody her passionate commitment to music as a means to uplift and enrich communities. From 1996 to 2002, Ms. Cha-Pyo served as Artistic Director and Conductor of the Riverside Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir and Associate Director of Music at The Riverside Church in New York City. She has released 3 recordings with the Riverside Choir (JAV Recordings). A committed music educator, she pioneered the Riverside Music Educational Program, which served thousands of New York City public school children. Born in Seoul, Ms. Cha-Pyo immigrated to the US when she was 12. She studied piano and organ in the Pre-College Division at The Juilliard School. She holds a Bachelor of Music in organ performance from Oberlin Conservatory and Masters of Music in conducting and organ performance from the Eastman School of Music. She served as assistant conductor to the Eastman Philharmonia and the Britt Festival Orchestra (OR). She also won conducting fellowships at the Aspen Festival and Yale School of Music.

Member Bio Founder of the Chaffee Core Musicianship Project. Clark A. Chaffee is a graduate of the Interlochen Arts Academy and has earned Music Education degrees from the University of Michigan and Northern Illinois University. A two-time Nationally Certified educator (MENC and NBPTS), he has held adjunct faculty positions at Elgin and McHenry Colleges, National Guitar Teachers Workshops, the Illinois Summer Youth Music program, and the Music Institute of Chicago. He is the former Vice President in charge of the Orchestra Division for the Illinois Music Educators Association. Clark is an active youth orchestra guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator, with publications including Rhythm Workshop and Key Shapes for Strings. He has served as a clinician for the American String Teachers Association (at the national level and for both Illinois and Arizona), the Music Educators National Conference, the Illinois Music Educators Association, the Arizona Band & Orchestra Directors Association, and the Texas Orchestra Directors Association. Clark was named the 2011 American String Teacher's Association Illinois Classroom Teacher of the Year. Clark made a major impact on the music education community and on the lives of thousands of students as the Director of Orchestras, Chamber Music, and Guitar at Adlai E. Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire, IL. With his educational vision and inspiring teaching style, he turned a 33-student orchestra into a multi-level, nationally recognized program with over 200 students and a large chamber music division involved in community outreach. The Stevenson High School Music Department earned recognition as one of MENC's Twelve Model Music Programs in 2006, was a two-time finalist for Grammy in the Schools, was an honoree of Those Who Excel (from ISBE), and was one of four high schools in the country in 2010 to earn the Kennedy Center Excellence in Music Education recognition. As a performer, Clark is primarily a percussionist, and has studied under many excellent teachers including Paul Yancich, Jim Salmon, Charles Owen, Don Koss, and Harold Jones. Clark held the position of Principal Timpanist in the Elgin (Illinois) Symphony for 20 years, and performed with the Chicago Civic orchestra, the training orchestra for the Chicago Symphony. He has served as principal timpanist in the Rockford Symphony (Illinois), Chandler Symphony Orchestra (Arizona), Hinsdale Chamber Orchestra (Illinois), and the Downers Grove Oratorio Society (Illinois). Clark's performing experience is not limited to the percussion section: he has been a baritone in the Chicago Symphony Chorus, Principal Bass in the Valley Civic Orchestra, and has worked extensively as a freelance timpanist, jazz drummer, and vocalist. Clark has appeared in various amateur orchestras and ensembles on bass, cello, viola, violin, and guitar.

Simon Chalk

Member Bio Simon was born and educated in a small mining village in South Wales and began playing the violin at age 11. He studied conducting and violin at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and he spent his early career as a teacher, violinist and chamber musician with the Almira String Quartet. He has since developed a flourishing and versatile career as a conductor, musical director, leader, director and educator and has gradually relinquished the bow in favour of the baton. Based in the West Midlands in the UK, Simon has performed with and conducted orchestras and ensembles both throughout the UK and internationally. He was appointed as Chief Conductor of the Slovak Sinfonietta (Štátny Komorný Orchester Zilina - state chamber orchestra of Slovakia) in September 2015 and completed a three year tenure. He now continues his relationship with the Orchestra as Permanent Guest Conductor. In January 2018 he was honoured by the government of Slovakia through the award of a Diploma of Appreciation in recognition of 'extraordinary merits in the development of friendly relationships with the Slovak Republic'. July 2018 saw Simon taking part in the Bucharest International Conducting Competition when he was awarded the 'special prize', voted for by the members of the Bucharest Symphony Orchestra. In 2022 he returned to Romania in order to compete in the inaugural 'Orchestra's Conductor' competition in Brasov and was awarded first prize. This win is especially special to Simon as the jury was formed of the orchestral members of the Filarmonica Brasov. The final concert was streamed live on YouTube and the audience, both in the concert hall and those watching live, were also given the opportunity to vote - Simon also won the audience vote. He will return to Brasov during 2022/23 and 2023/24 to undertake future engagements with the Orchestra. Simon became Artistic Director of the Southern Sinfonia in 2016 whilst continuing to undertake guest conductor appearances with internationally renowned ensembles, perhaps most notably the St Petersburg Symphony Orchestra. Equally at home with both classical and crossover repertoire, he became Russell Watson's Musical Director for much of Russell's UK tour in 2018. Prior to this Simon has spent a significant amount of time touring the globe as conductor with the internationally renowned classical crossover group ll Divo. His relationship with Il Divo has taken him on three world tours across six continents, performing with a plethora of international orchestras along the way and conducting in many of the world's iconic concert halls and arenas.
