Alexander Chen

Member Bio Alexander Chen is a Taiwanese-American conductor and cellist based in Virginia, USA, with a passion for bringing together traditional and non-traditional audiences through symphonic repertoire. He enjoys combining unique perspectives on familiar programming with underrepresented hidden gems to create refreshing musical stories. Chen made his guest conductor debut with the Virginia Symphony Orchestra in March of 2024 and regularly serve as a cover conductor with the Symphony. Early 2025 saw Chen assist at the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra. He returns to the Virginia Symphony to conduct programs in the spring and summer of 2025. Showcasing his love for collaboration, Chen has worked alongside a number of notable conductors and artists such as Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Eric Jacobsen, Thomas Wilkins, JoAnn Falletta, Alan Pierson, Anthony McGill, Demarre McGill, Chris Thile, Gabriel Kahane, Olga Kern, Michelle Cann, and Lara Downes In addition to his performing schedule, he currently serves on the faculty of the Virginia Wesleyan University as the Director of Orchestra. He’s a frequent guest to the various education institutions in Hampton Roads including the Governor’s School for the Arts, Old Dominion University, Bay Youth Orchestra of Virginia, and The Orchestra of the Eastern Shore. Chen completed his Master of Music in Conducting at the Northwestern University Bienen School of Music in 2023, where he studied with Victor Yampolsky.

Member Bio Born in Taiwan, Dr. Chun-Ming Chen (Jimmy)is currently the Director of Orchestral Activities at the University of South Dakota. Previously, Chen has served as Director of Orchestral Acativities at the University of Evansville, Conductor of the Evansville Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, Music Director of the Heatland Symphony Orchestra in Little Falls/Brainerd, MN, interim Conductor of the Grinnell Symphony Orchestra in Grinnell, IA, acting director of the Coe College Symphony Orchestra in Cedar Rapids, IA, Co-director of the Ithaca College Sinfonietta in Ithaca, NY, and the Director of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Chinese Choral Society in Boston, MA. He has appeared as guest conductor with the Tunghai University Opera Department, and Miaoli Wind Ensemble in Taiwan, Boston Conservatory Symphony Orchestra, Boston Conservatory Wind Ensemble, Greater Boston Chinese Cultural Association Choral Society, Chorus Boston, Cornell Symphony Orchestra, Ithaca College Chamber Orchestra, Ithaca College Symphony Orchestra, and the University of Iowa Symphony Orchestra. Dr. Chen has received his bachelor’s degree in saxophone performance from Tunghai University, master’s degrees in orchestral conducting from Boston Conservatory and Ithaca College, and a doctorate in orchestral conducting from the University of Iowa. His primary teachers have included Dr. Annie Chung, Bruce Hangen, Dr. Jeffery Meyer, and Dr. William LaRue Jones.

Wei-Chung Chen

Member Bio Wei-Chung Chen is a Taiwanese conductor who is currently pursuing his Doctoral Degree in Orchestral Conducting at Indiana University, USA, with full scholarships from both Indiana University and the Taiwanese Ministry of Education. Studying under professors Arthur Fagen, Thomas Wilkins, and Jeff Meyer, he currently serves as the Music Director of the Indiana University All-Campus Orchestra and the Bloomington Bridges MAYO Youth Symphony Orchestra. In 2023, Chen won first place in the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra's International Music Talent Elite Competition and will guest conduct the National Taiwan Symphony Youth Orchestra this November.

Gordon Cheung

Member Bio Gordon Cheung is a Doctoral student in Orchestral Conducting at Boston University under the tutelage of Sarah Ioannides. Shortly after he commenced his studies, he got an invitation to collaborate with the Opera Institute, presenting Nico Muhly’s Dark Sisters at their annual Fringe Festival. At BU, he also serves as the assistant conductor and works closely with the Symphony Orchestra. Cheung received a Master of Music from Bard College Conservatory of Music and a B.A. (First-Class Honors) from The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Gordon assisted James Bagwell in the semi-stage production of Gilbert & Sullivan’s Iolanthe at the Fisher Center with The Orchestra Now (TÕN). He was selected for the conducting workshop at Spokane Symphony and Fort Wayne Philharmonic. Cheung also appeared at the Eastern Music Festival in two summers as the Conducting Scholar, where he maintained a close mentorship from Gerard Schwarz.
