Mr. Lawrence Eckerling

Member Bio Lawrence Eckerling comes to the Evanston Symphony Orchestra after just concluding a sixteen year tenure as Music Director and Conductor of the St. Cloud Symphony Orchestra in Minnesota. Prior to that position which he began in 1986, he served as Assistant Conductor to the Omaha Symphony, and as Music Director and Conductor of the Omaha Area Youth Orchestras. In 1980 he founded the Pro Musica Chamber Orchestra of Chicago which performed a series of free Music Performance Trust Fund Concerts. Eckerling's local guest conducting engagements have included the Skokie Valley Symphony Orchestra, the Park Ridge Symphony Orchestra , the Lake Shore Symphony Orchestra and the Kankakee Symphony Orchestra. Other guest conducting engagements have included the Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra in Minneapolis, Opera Omaha, the Nebraska Chamber Orchestra, and the Germantown Symphony in Memphis. Beginning his piano studies at the age of six at the Northwestern University School of Music’s “Primary Piano Department”, Eckerling remains an active pianist. His piano engagements have included performances of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue with the St. Cloud Symphony Orchestra and with the Mount Prospect(Ill.) Community Band. He has performed regularly with the Chicago-based Duetri Ensemble, appeared on the “Live From Landmark” Minnesota Public Radio series, and was an annual performer at the Central Minnesota Music school “ Soiree” fundraising event. Eckerling received his Bachelors Degree in Music Education (both instrumental and choral music) at Indiana University in Bloomington. He earned his Masters Degree in Orchestral and Opera Conducting from the same institution. Eckerling is also active in the jazz and pop fields. As leader of the Lake Forest Synthesizer Duo between 1984 and 1992, he has presented more than 500 educational concerts in schools throughout the region. And since 1984 as leader of “Larry Eckerling & His Orchestra”, he has presented live music from classical music to rock and roll for private functions throughout the Chicago area. Born in Chicago, Eckerling grew up in Skokie, and makes his home in Glenview, Illinois with his wife Sharon, and his son, Jeremy.

Mr. Gerardo Edelstein

Member Bio A native of Argentina, Gerardo Edelstein, has an extensive experience conducting symphony orchestras, choirs, ballet and opera in Europe, Asia, South America and the United States. Critics and audiences alike have hailed his performances as powerful, profound and exhilarating. This year marks his sixth season as music director/conductor of the Williamsport Symphony Orchestra and under his leadership, the orchestra has reached new artistic heights and secured financial stability. In addition, Mr. Edelstein is director of orchestral studies, music director of the Philharmonic and Chamber Orchestras and artistic director of the Music at Penn’s Woods summer festival at the Pennsylvania State University. Maestro Edelstein has guest conducted the Israel Sinfonietta and the Israel Kibbutz Orchestra in Israel, the Bohuslav Martinu Philharmonic in the Czech Republic, the Kharkov Philharmonic in the Ukraine, the Tucuman Symphony Orchestra and Choir and the Symphony Orchestra of the Universidad Nacional de Cuyo in Argentina, the Houston Chamber Orchestra, the Houston Ballet, the San Antonio Metropolitan Ballet, the Pennsylvania Chamber Chorale and Orchestra and the Kalamazoo and San Antonio Symphonies in the United States. In the summer of 2004, Mr. Edelstein was invited to guest conduct in the first international orchestra festival in Dublin, Ireland. Most recently, he guest conducted at the festival “Recontres Musicales Internationales des Graves” in France and future engagements include concerts in Israel and Brazil. With the Penn State Philharmonic Orchestra he toured Spain and performed at Carnegie Hall in New York, Kimmel Center in Philadelphia and Heinz Hall in Pittsburgh. For the fiftieth anniversary of the Penn State College of Arts and Architecture Mr. Edelstein conducted a full production of Leonard Bernstein’s “Mass,” a collaborative effort between the school of music and school of theatre. In Israel he was principal conductor of the Jerusalem Oratorio Choir and Orchestra with whom he appeared on radio and television and toured throughout the country. In the United States, Maestro Edelstein served as assistant conductor, associate conductor and music advisor for the Richmond Symphony in Virginia for three seasons, conducting a variety of performances including several subscription series. Under his leadership, the Symphony won first prize in the year 2000 for innovative music programming awarded by the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers. Committed to the education of young musicians, Mr. Edelstein was conductor of the Youth Orchestra of San Antonio for three seasons and served as clinician and guest conductor for many orchestra festivals in Virginia, Michigan, Texas, Vermont, New York, Colorado and Pennsylvania. He has collaborated in side-by-side concerts with the San Antonio Symphony and the Pittsburgh Symphony.

Member Bio Ms. Eden is based in Santa Barbara. She was a charter orchestra member and Assistant Conductor of the Santa Barbara Civic Light Opera, and has performed with numerous companies from San Francisco to Los Angeles. Member Bio Conductor ANNA EDWARDS’ musical career progression as a violinist, educator, and symphony conductor has inspired her mission to encourage and promote musical diversity at the highest level from professional, educational, and collaborative music organizations across the country. She is a passionate advocate of music from underrepresented composers on the concert stage. Currently, Edwards balances her time between conducting in the Pacific Northwest, serving as a guest conductor/clinician across the country, and developing young musicians through instruction and collaboration with professionals in concert settings. The 2022-23 season marks the tenth season for Edwards as Music Director of the Seattle Collaborative Orchestra, eighth season as Music Director of the Saratoga Orchestra, fifth season as Music Director of the Pacific Northwest Conducting Institute, and third season as team member of Everything Conducting. As a recognized leader for the promotion of musical diversity in symphonic orchestral music, Dave Beck, of Seattle Classical KING FM wrote, “The Seattle Collaborative Orchestra under Dr. Anna Edwards’ excellent musicianship, inspired vision, and creative leadership, is doing everything a modern orchestra should be doing to insure the future of the art of symphonic music. Commissioned premieres include works by Joe Jaxson, Sarah Bassingthwaighte, Leanna Primiani, Julian Garvue, Brendan McMullen, Andy Clausen, David Lien, Tim Huling, Angelique Poteat, and Victoria Bond. Anna additionally offers lectures concerning music, gender, and leadership to up-and-coming musicians and community leaders in public schools, community businesses, Colleges, and Universities.

Member Bio Nathaniel Efthimiou, DMA is the newly appointed Assistant Conductor of the Jacksonville Symphony and Music Director of Jacksonville Symphony Youth Orchestras. He previously served as Assistant Conductor of the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra and Assistant Professor of Music at Berklee College of Music. He is a four-time recipient of The Solti Foundation U.S. Career Assistance Award and was recently selected by members of the Vienna Philharmonic as the AAF/Faber Young Conductor Fellowship (formerly the Karajan Fellowship) at the Salzburg Festival. He was a semi-finalist in the 2nd Hong Kong International Conducting Competition 2023.During his tenure at the Rhode Island Philharmonic, he received critical acclaim for two last-minute appearances on subscription programs. He has also led education programs serving young people across Rhode Island and southern Massachusetts. Nathaniel has conducted orchestras such as the London Symphony Orchestra, as a quarter-finalist in the Donatella Flick Conducting Competition 2021, the Hong Kong Sinfonietta, the Rhode Island Philharmonic, Amarillo Symphony, Southwest Florida Symphony Orchestra, and musicians of the Memphis Symphony Orchestra. He has covered conductors such as Leonard Slatkin, Keith Lockhart, Robert Spano, and Thomas Wilkins with orchestras including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Minnesota Orchestra, and Portland Symphony Orchestra.As a passionate educator, he has worked with the New England Conservatory’s Summer Orchestra Institute, Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras, and served on a selection committee for the Anthony Quinn Foundation’s student scholarships. He has been a guest conductor and lecturer with numerous colleges, including Boston University, where he presented a seminar on “The Evolution from Student to Professional” with Boston University’s doctoral conducting candidates. He also served as the Head of Instrumental Activities at Westminster Academy in Memphis, Tennessee.Nathaniel is equally comfortable in the opera pit and was the recipient of the 2023 Elizabeth Buccheri Opera Residency program with Opera Southwest (Albuquerque, NM), where he assisted Anthony Barrese and conducted Rossini’s L’occasione fa il ladro. He has also worked on productions ranging from Debussy’s Pélleas et Mélisande, Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi, and Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore. In October 2018, he led four performances of Tom Cipullo’s provocative operetta, After Life, at BU Opera Institute’s “Fringe Festival.”As a former composer, Nathaniel is a dedicated advocate for new music. He has brought new works to life with the Susan and Ford Schumann Center for Composition Studies at the Aspen Music Festival, the BU Opera Institute, and the Boston University Center for New Music. He studied composition with Joel Hoffman, David Ludwig, and David Davies, and his work has been featured in festivals such as the Atlantic Music Festival (Maine), “UPBEAT” (Croatia), and WSKG’s television program, Expressions (Binghamton, NY).Nathaniel began studying piano, violin, and organ from an early age and later began studying composition. His path to conducting grew from his interdisciplinary approach to music and the Arts, which he still maintains today. He has served as associate concertmaster of the Southern Tier Symphony Orchestra (Olean, NY) and actively freelanced as a violinist in Memphis, TN. He has studied conducting at numerous festivals including the Aspen Music Festival and School, where he was awarded the James Conlon Conductor Prize (2016), the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music, and Domaine Forget de Charlevoix. His teachers have included Bramwell Tovey, Robert Spano, Larry Rachleff, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, and Cristian Măcelaru. He received both his Bachelor of Music and Master of Arts from the Greatbatch School of Music and his Doctor of Musical Arts from Boston University.

Member Bio Carlos Elias has performed in solo recitals and in orchestras in the United States, El Salvador, Argentina, Bulgaria, Japan, and Korea, and represented El Salvador at the World Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Lorin Maazel. He has participated in several music festivals, such as Congress of Strings, Aspen Music Festival (CO), Sarasota Music Festival (FL), Casals Festival (Puerto Rico), Affinis Music Festival (Japan), Western Slope Music Festival (CO), Corsi Internazionali di Musica (Italy), Raphael Trio Chamber Music Workshop (VT), and Music in the Mountains (CO). Before joining Cedarville in August 2013 he was the Director of Strings and Orchestra at Colorado Mesa University. In addition, he was Concertmaster of the Grand Junction Symphony Orchestra and Artistic Director and Conductor of the Symphony in the Valley in Glenwood Springs (CO). He and his wife, pianist Andrea Arese-Elias, gave their New York debut at Weill Hall in Carnegie Hall in 2002. Their recently released CD “Let’s Tango” was named “Best of the Best” in the International category on eMusic in the US and the United Kingdom. He is currently the Violin Professor and Conductor of the Symphony Orchestra at Cedarville University.

Member Bio Anthony Elliott’s studies were with two legendary figures of the cello, Janos Starker and Frank Miller. He has given master classes at most of America’s leading music programs including Cleveland Institute of Music, Eastman School of Music, the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University, Indiana University, Oberlin Conservatory, Peabody Conservatory, Chicago’s Music Center of the North Shore, and Interlochen Arts Academy. He devotes most of his summer to teaching and performing at the Aspen Music Festival. A frequent guest soloist with major orchestras, Anthony Elliott has performed most of the standard concerto repertory with such orchestras as the New York Philharmonic, the Minnesota Orchestra, the Detroit Symphony, the Vancouver Symphony, and the CBC Toronto Orchestra. He has also commissioned new works by such composers as Primous Fountain III, Augustus Hill, James Lee III, and Chad E. Hughes. As a soloist, his performances have been recorded and broadcast on radio and television across the United States and Canada. Also in great demand as a chamber musician, he is a regular guest artist at the Sitka (Alaska) Summer Music Festival, the Seattle Chamber Music Festival, the Texas Music Festival, New York’s Bargemusic Chamber Series, Chamber Music International of Dallas, Houston’s DaCamera Series, the Victoria International Festival, and the Gateways Festival. He has also appeared as a member of Quartet Canada, with members of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, and with members of the Emerson, Juilliard, Cleveland, and Concord string quartets. He has appeared in chamber music with the present and former concertmasters of the Berlin Philharmonic, the Concertgebouw of Amsterdam, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the Cleveland Orchestra.
