Ms. Victoria Gau

Member Bio Lauded by critics for her “strong sense of style and drama” (The Washington Post) and her “enthusiastic and perceptive conducting”, conductor Victoria Gau brings a wide range of musical experience and expertise to her work. Ms. Gau is Artistic Director and Conductor of the Capital City Symphony (DC). In 2019 she left a nine-year tenure as Associate Conductor of National Philharmonic to assume the role of Music Director of Cantate, where she now conducts both the Cantate Chamber Singers and the new Concert Choir. Maestra Gau is well-known in the Washington DC area for her work music directing opera. She has served as Artistic Director and Music Director/Conductor of the Other Opera Company in Bethesda, Maryland, which she co-founded in 1992. She has also served as music director for such Washington area companies as The Washington Savoyards, Victorian Lyric Opera Company, Annapolis Opera Musicales, the Eldbrook Opera Ensemble, and the IN-Series. Ms. Gau has served on the opera faculty at George Mason University, and worked with vocalists privately and in the Crittenden Opera Studio. She has toured with Odyssey Opera Theatre and the Baltimore Opera Company, performing educational outreach in schools throughout the state of Maryland. Ms. Gau has a passion for fostering ongoing expression in music and is known as a strong advocate for American composers, with a particular interest in female and BIPOC composers. Her interests extend to supporting young artists. She recently founded the Cantate Young Artists of Color program, where the chorus facilitates opportunities for and mentorship of young artists who are in residence for a season. Gau is in demand as a leader of concerts for young audiences as well as a conductor and string educator at youth orchestra festivals and workshops. For a number of years she conducted National Philharmonic’s annual concerts for Montgomery County 2nd graders as well as the Junior Summer String Institute Orchestra. She is the former conductor of the Young Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra, an elite group of string players from the DC Youth Orchestra Program, as well as the Akron Youth Symphony, and has conducted youth orchestra festivals in Virginia, Ohio, and New York. Gau has conducted Side-by Side events with DC-area youth orchestras and the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center, the SOGO Conservatory Orchestra (Olympia, WA), the Vermont All-State Orchestra Festival, and the Maryland Senior All-State Orchestra. She is in demand in the region as an orchestral clinician, and teaches conducting both privately and at workshops, most recently at the 2022 American String Teachers National Conference. Orchestral guest conducting includes the Open Page Ensemble, Alexandria (VA) and Akron (OH) Symphonies, the Friday Morning Music Club Orchestra, and the Kennedy Center Messiah Sing-Along. Andrew Gekoskie

Member Bio American born conductor Andrew Gekoskie has continued to expand his presence on the American and Worldwide musical scenes in orchestral conducting as well as music education outreach. His grasp of the literature enables him to develop programs with flair, depth, and innovation. His artistic vision, experience, and abilities transform his passion of the repertoire into well-coordinated programs that have been critically acclaimed. In demand as a conductor, Gekoskie is Director of Music/Conductor of the Orchestra X Project in Northern Virginia, a professional orchestra specializing in new music and presenting classical music in new and innovative ways. With over 39 years of experience as a performing pianist and 28 years as a conductor, Gekoskie has conducted throughout the U.S. and Europe, and has been recognized by colleagues, performers, international organizations, and leading professionals. Mr. Michael Gesme

Member Bio Michael Gesme is a Professor of Music at Central Oregon Community College and Chair of the Department of Fine Arts and Communication. In this wonderfully diverse position, Michael, in addition to his duties with the Central Oregon Symphony, conducts the Cascade Winds Symphonic Band and has taught various and sundry music courses, including music theory, ear training, music history, and conducting, as part of a small, but flourishing music department. In addition to his duties at COCC, Michael serves as conductor of the Central Oregon Chamber Orchestra and is the music director and conductor of orchestras of the Young Musicians and Artists (YMA) summer camp held in Salem, Oregon. He is also an active clinician and adjudicator in the region. Michael has served as music director of the Linfield Chamber Orchestra and the Missouri Chamber Orchestra and has appeared as a guest conductor with several ensembles including the Sunriver Music Festival Orchestra, Salem Chamber Orchestra, and Wenatchee Valley Symphony. He received his bachelor’s degree from Luther College (Decorah, IA) and his master’s degree in orchestral conducting from the University of Missouri-Columbia.

Mark Gibson

Member Bio Mark Gibson, director of orchestral studies at CCM since 1998, enjoys a career that spans three continents, guest conducting and teaching from Munich to Manila. Prior to his arrival in Cincinnati, Gibson served as principal conductor of the Alabama Symphony, visiting director of orchestral studies at the Eastman School of Music and music director of the New York City Opera National Company, among other posts. He was artistic director of the Opera Theatre and Music Festival of Lucca in Italy and director of the opera conducting course at CCM Spoleto. Presently artistic director of CCM’s unique immersion program, the Summer Opera Bootcamp, he is also Head of the Conducting Institute at the Miami Music Festival. Gibson's conducting credits include the Minnesota Orchestra, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, Omaha Symphony, Jacksonville Symphony, Rochester Philharmonic, Cincinnati Opera, New York City Opera, Dallas Opera, Opera Pacific, New Orleans Opera, Cleveland Opera, Chautauqua Opera and Spoleto U.S.A. Michael Giel

Member Bio Michael Giel has served as Principal Conductor for the Capitol City Opera Company in Atlanta since 2010 and is also the Associate Conductor for the California Piano Concerto Festival in San Jose, CA. Praised for his “infectious onstage energy” and “vivacious demeanor,” (Arts ATL), he is currently in his third season as the conductor of the LaGrange Symphony Youth Orchestra. Most recently, he has conducted the Atlanta Pops Orchestra in and around metro Atlanta. Michael is in his 19th year of teaching and is currently the Director of Orchestras at Dunwoody High School. He received his Bachelor of Music Performance and a Bachelor of Music Education from Valdosta State University and completed a Master of Music in Music Education from the University of Georgia. Michael served as the Orchestra Director for the Georgia Governor’s Honors Program at Valdosta State University from 2008 to 2014 and has been a clinician for the Atlanta Public, Cherokee, DeKalb, Fulton, and Muscogee County orchestra festivals. As a violinist and violist, he has performed with several orchestras in Georgia and Florida including the Savannah Philharmonic, Gwinnett Philharmonic, Valdosta Symphony Orchestra, Ocmulgee Symphony, Gainesville (GA) Symphony, Albany (GA) Symphony, Coastal Symphony of Georgia, Rome (GA) Symphony, Atlanta Pops Orchestra, Ludwig Symphony Orchestra, Da Salo Solisti Chamber Orchestra, LaGrange Symphony, and the Central Florida Symphony. In the modern music arena, Michael has performed with and for artists such as the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Josh Groban, Chloe Agnew (Celtic Woman), John Driskell Hopkins (Zac Brown Band), Debby Boone, Il Volo, Debbie Reynolds, Barry Manilow, Michael Bolton, Evanescence, the Oprah Winfrey Show, Sarah Brightman, Lindsey Stirling, and Il Divo. Michael is a native of Atlanta and lives in Brookhaven with his wife Catherine, who is a concert pianist, and both play in the rock band Full Service featuring Catherine on keyboard and Michael on electric bass. In his spare time, Michael is an avid tennis player and outdoor enthusiast.

Member Bio Renee Gilliland conducts the University of Colorado at Boulder Campus Orchestra where she is pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts Degree under the instruction of Maestro Gary Lewis. She is also the Music Director of the Anschutz Medical Campus Symphony Orchestra in Aurora, Colorado and Cover Conductor of the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra in Boulder, Colorado. Renee was recently awarded an Artist Diploma in Orchestral Conducting from the University of Denver where she was the Assistant Conductor of the Lamont School of Music Symphony and Opera Theater Orchestras. Last season Renee was also the Associate Conductor of the Denver Philharmonic Orchestra. This summer Gilliland had the opportunity to conduct Strauss's Perpetuum Mobile with the El Paso Symphony as a guest at their Pop Goes the Fort Fourth of July performance at Fort Bliss. In August 2018, Gilliland had the opportunity to conduct Beethoven and Berlioz in performance with the Lviv Philharmonic in Ukraine at the International Conducting Workshop and Festival. Gilliland has also served as guest conductor for the Boulder Concert Band conducting five of their summer concert series performances. She has also guest conducted the Cleveland Pops in Cleveland, Tennessee. Other ensembles she has worked with at international and national workshops include the New Symphony Orchestra in Bulgaria, the Martinu Philharmonic in the Czech Republic, and groups in Chicago, Connecticut, and New York. Gilliland also holds a Master of Music in Viola Performance with an outside area in Conducting from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. She received a Bachelor of Music in Music Education and Certificate of Violin Performance from the University of Texas at Austin Butler School of Music. Gilliland has performed as a section violinist and violist with ensembles such as the Ars Nova Chamber Orchestra in Washington, D.C., with the Richmond and Columbus, Indiana Orchestras, as well as Las Cruces, New Mexico, Brazos Valley, and El Paso, Texas Symphony Orchestras. Gilliland was selected to perform with the first International YouTube Symphony Orchestra at Carnegie Hall under the direction of Michael Tilson Thomas and performed as a Young Artist Competition Winner with the El Paso Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Gurer Aykal. Gilliland formerly served as the String Instructor at Blinn College in Brenham, Texas and as Director of Orchestras at Morton Ranch High School in Katy, Texas. Her orchestras received superior ratings and sweepstakes awards in competitions in and outside of the state of Texas. She enjoys guest conducting for All-Region and local orchestras as well as judging at region, area and state levels. Most recently Gilliland was a guest clinician and conductor for the Denver Public Schools Intermediate Orchestra in the Citywide Orchestra Festival.

Jonathan Girard

Member Bio American-born conductor Jonathan Girard is one of the rising stars of his generation. A passionate musician committed to engaging audiences with thrilling performances, he continues to gain a reputation as a musical force equally versed in symphonic repertoire, opera, and new music. As the Director of Orchestras at the University of British Columbia School of Music, Mr. Girard dedicates himself to raising the standard of orchestral training in Western Canada. The UBC Symphony’s 2015-2016 season celebrates the University centennial year with a world première by Jared Miller, Soundscape for a Century Past, and the ninth symphonies of Beethoven, Schubert, and Shostakovich. The 2014-2015 season featured Bartok’s Concerto for Orchestra and Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5, and culminated in two performances of Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 with 300 musicians on stage. Highlights of 2013-2014 season included a landmark performance of Le Sacre du printemps to mark the 100th anniversary of the work’s première, and a tour of Western Canada with Canadian violinist David Gillham, featuring the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 and Strauss’ Don Juan. This past summer, Mr. Girard made his European operatic conducting debut with the European Music Academy leading the North Czech Philharmonic Orchestra in performances of Le nozze di Figaro in opera houses across the Czech Republic. He also worked with Bramwell Tovey as assistant conductor for the inagural season of the VSO Whistler Institue. He was the assistant conductor of the Ohio Light Opera from 2012-2014. His 2014 engagement included 8 performances of Strauss’ Die Fledermaus. Mr. Girard recently served as cover conductor for the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra (NY) and made his debut with them in May of 2012. Mr. Girard was the Visiting Artist Conductor at the University of Northern Iowa School of Music in 2010-2011 and has held positions as the music director of the New Eastman Outreach Orchestra and Waltham Philharmonic (MA), associate conductor of the Brockton Symphony Orchestra (MA), principal guest conductor of the Boston Orpheus Ensemble and assistant conductor of the Portland (ME) Opera Repertory Theatre. At the Eastman School of Music, he studied conducting with Neil Varon and was the assistant conductor of the Eastman Symphony Orchestra, the Eastman Philharmonia, and the Eastman Opera Theatre.

Member Bio Acclaimed for his vibrant, inspired performances, imaginative programming and evocative command of different styles and composers, American conductor Lawrence Golan has developed a reputation as a dynamic, charismatic communicator. He has conducted throughout the United States and in Bulgaria, Canada, China, Czech Republic, El Salvador, England, Georgia, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, South Korea, Taiwan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan, and continues to develop relationships with orchestras nationally and abroad. Golan has served as Music Director of the Yakima Symphony Orchestra in Washington state since 2010, Colorado’s Denver Philharmonic since 2013, and Pennsylvania’s York Symphony Orchestra since 2014. He is also Music Director of Colorado’s Lamont Symphony Orchestra and Opera Theatre at the University of Denver. In addition to concerts with the orchestras of which he is Music Director, Golan’s 2018-19 season includes return engagements with the Tucson Symphony Orchestra (for performances of The Nutcracker with Tucson Regional Ballet Company), his debut with Italy’s Orchestra Sinfonica di Sanremo and Maui Pops Orchestra, and leading a summer 2019 production of Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro at the Europäisches Musikinstitut Wien. 2018 summer performances included the Yakima Symphony Orchestra’s new concert series at Cave B Summer Music Theater in Quincy, Washington and a sold-out concert with the Bayerische Philharmonie in Munich, Germany. Recent season highlights included guest conducting debuts with Germany’s Bayerische Philharmonie, Mexico’s Orquesta de Cámara de Bellas Artes, China’s Wuhan Philharmonic and the music festivals of Colorado and Batumi (Georgia, Eastern Europe); a 14-city tour of China with the Denver Philharmonic, and return engagements with Italy’s Orchestra Sinfonica Città di Grosseto, the Tucson Symphony Orchestra and the Portland Ballet Company. As a recording artist, Mr. Golan has made several recordings, both as conductor and as a violinist. In 2018, Albany Records released the world premiere Blu-ray disc and audio CD of composer Jiaojiao Zhou’s theatrical symphonic poem Ode to Nature with the Lamont Symphony Orchestra under Maestro Golan and producer Dennis Law. Mr. Golan has recorded three CDs with the Moravian Philharmonic for Albany Records. The most recent, “Tchaikovsky 6 & Tchaikovsky 6.1” featuring the composer’s Symphony No. 6 and the recording premiere of Tchaikovsky 6.1 by Peter Boyer (a work commissioned by Golan), won two Prestige Music Awards. “Funky Little Crustaceans” features orchestral music by Colorado composer William Hill, and “Visions, Dreams & Memories” is a collection of works for Native American flute and orchestra with James Pellerite, former Principal Flutist of the Philadelphia Orchestra. Golan’s recording of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 & William Hill’s Beethoven 7.1 garnered two Global Music Awards.
