Member Bio Howard Hsu is the Music Director of the Valdosta (GA) Symphony Orchestra, which performs a vital cultural role in the South Georgia region, and he also serves as Associate Professor of Music and Director of Orchestra Studies at Valdosta State University. Under his leadership, the Valdosta Symphony was selected as the 2014 winner of the American Prize in Orchestral Performance (community division), and has had performances aired statewide on Georgia Public Broadcasting Radio’s “Midday Music” and “Orchestras of Georgia” programs. Hsu has performed with the Canadian Brass, Robert McDuffie, Simone Dinnerstein, Jennifer Frautschi, Wendy Warner, Christine Brewer, Rachel Barton Pine, Orion Weiss, Stanford Olsen, Alexander Ghindin, Alexander Schimpf, Katia Skanavi, Awadagin Pratt, Amy Schwartz Moretti, and the Empire Brass. He conducted the world premiere of James Oliverio’s Trumpet Concerto No. 1: World House, the U.S. premiere of Ned McGowan’s Concerto for iPad and Orchestra (Rotterdam Concerto 2), and has given the Georgia premieres of Fernande Decruck’s Sonata for Saxophone and Orchestra, several of the Debussy/Matthews Preludes, and Jonathan Bailey Holland’s Motor City Dance Mix. Through the Symphony’s Youth Concert Series, he has introduced live classical music to thousands of children in the area. Howard Hsu has appeared as guest conductor with the Hartford (CT), Fox Valley (WI), Wyoming, Macon (GA), and New Britain (CT) Symphonies, as well as the Bronx (NY) Arts Ensemble, with whom he conducted the world premiere of Eleanor Cory’s O’Keeffe’s Flora. He was a Visiting Assistant Professor of Music at the University of Connecticut and Associate Conductor of the University of Connecticut Symphony Orchestra, and was Visiting Instructor of Music and Director of the Orchestra at Connecticut College. Howard Hsu has worked closely with groups dedicated to training young musicians, including the Lake George (NY) Opera Festival, where he served as Associate Conductor and Music Director of the Apprentice opera scenes concerts. Hsu has conducted the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association All State Orchestra, Georgia Music Educators Association All State 9/10 Orchestra and District 12 High School Honor Symphony Orchestra, Fulton County High School Honor Orchestra, Massachusetts Music Educators Association Central District Senior High School Festival Orchestra, the Georgia Governor’s Honors Program Orchestra and String Ensemble, Greater Waterbury (CT) Youth Symphony, and Greater Bridgeport (CT) Youth Orchestras. Through the Hartford Symphony’s Mentoring Program he served as a Master Teaching Artist, and was a faculty member with The Harlem (NY) School of the Arts. Howard Hsu received his D.M.A. from the University of Connecticut, his M.M. from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and his B.S. from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

Steven Huang

Member Bio Founder of International Conducting Masterclasses, Inc., Steven Huang has conducted orchestras and operas across the United States and throughout the world, including recurring guest conductor of the National Philharomonic of Moldova and l'Orchestre Philharmonique de Ste. Trinité, in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. At the age of twenty-one, he served as Music Director of the Bach Society Orchestra of Harvard University, where he received his undergraduate degree, as well as the Lowell House Opera, the oldest continuously running opera company in New England. He is currently on faculty as Director of Orchestral Activities at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. Mr. Huang has worked with young musicians in the nationally recognized Irvine Youth Symphony and the Four Seasons Orchestra in Southern California. He has held the position of Music Director of the University of Chicago Chamber Orchestra, the Central Illinois Youth Symphony, the Gilbert and Sullivan Players of Chicago, and the Bradley University Orchestra. He also founded the Peoria Young Players, an elite ensemble of young musicians. He has guest conducted programs with the Illinois Symphony Orchestra, and abroad, he has led the New Symphony Orchestra of Bulgaria; the Attergau Kultursommer Orchestra in Austria, in conjunction with the Salzburg Festival; the Jeunesses Musicales Festival Orchestra, and Pitesti Philharmonic in Romania; the “Regina Vioara” International Violin Festival Orchestra in Moldova; and L’Orchestre Philharmonique de Sainte Trinité, Haiti, where he volunteers to teach young Haitian musicians. Mr. Huang earned the Master of Music degree in Orchestral Conducting from the University of Michigan as a student of Kenneth Kiesler. He twice received the Herbert von Karajan Fellowship for Young Conductors for study at the Salzburg Festival, and the Fulbright Fellowship for study at the National University of Music in Bucharest, where he was the student of Dumitru Goia. Catherine R. Hudnall

Member Bio Dr. Catherine Hudnall received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music, her master’s degree from Georgia State University, and her doctoral degree from Mercer University. She has taught in South Carolina, Hawai’i, and Georgia. In addition to directing the South Carolina and Mississippi All-State Orchestras, she has been a guest director of the Emory Youth Symphony and the Gwinnett Philharmonic and was the co-director of the Gwinnett County Youth Symphony for six years. She is an active clinician, conductor, and adjudicator in the state of Georgia and has presented sessions and clinics at the Georgia Music Educators Conference, the Woodruff Arts Center Conference, and the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago. She has also adjudicated in Hawai’I, Nevada, and will serve as an adjudicator in New Mexico at the American String Teachers Association National Orchestra festival in 2019. In 2018, she received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Georgia Chapter of ASTA. A professional cellist, she performs with the Candler String Quartet and has performed with many orchestras, including the Maui Symphony, the Atlanta Pops Orchestra, the Brevard Music Center Orchestra, the Gwinnett Philharmonic Orchestra, the Augusta Symphony, the Charleston Symphony, and the Columbia Symphony. She studied cello with Martha Gerschefski and Hans Schmettau and was a member of the first International Cello Congress Cello Choir, conducted by Mistislav Rostropovitch. ​ Dr. Hudnall currently teaches at Brookwood High School in Gwinnett County, an Orchestra program that serves over 350 students in five orchestras. She is a member of the National Association for Music Educations, the American String Teachers Association, the Performing Arts Medical Association, and the Andover Educators (as an affiliate). Her orchestras have performed at Carnegie Hall, the ASTA national conference, the Georgia Music Educators Conference, and at various festivals and venues throughout the United States and Canada. She teaches cello privately and is a teacher and consultant of Healthy Musicianship. She and her family live in Tucker with their beloved dog, River.

Member Bio SILAS NATHANIEL HUFF is a conductor, composer, and U.S. Army Music Officer, currently acting as Director of Orchestras at Washburn University (Topeka, KS), Music Director of Colorado Pops Orchestra, Co-Director of the International Conducting Institute (dedicated to training the world's next generation of conductors), Staff Conductor of the International Concerto Festival and Commander & Conductor of the 44th Army Band (Albuquerque, NM). Huff has conducted orchestral, band, choral, opera, ballet, and new music performances for 15+ years across the United States and Europe. He has conducted youth, university, and professional ensembles in CA, CO, CT, FL, IN, IL, MD, MA, MO, NJ, NM, NY, PA, TX, and VA, and across Europe. As a U.S. Army Music Officer, Captain Huff has conducted concerts at the White House, the U.S. Capitol, Arlington National Cemetery, the Pentagon, and at other important monuments and landmarks in Washington, D.C., for diplomats, heads of state, royalty, and audiences numbering in the thousands. His recordings of important works and broadcasts of live performances have been seen by millions of listeners and viewers. In 2001, he was named Conductor of the Year by the California St Univ system, and the Texas House of Representatives signed House Resolution No. 113 recognizing Maestro Huff's distinguished musical service in 2011, and in 2015, the U.S. Army conferred upon him a Meritorious Service Medal for his outstanding and exceptionally meritorious leadership of the U.S. Army Orchestra in Washington, D.C.
