Joseph Kneer

Member Bio Conductor, violinist, and composer Joseph Kneer currently serves as Associate Professor of Music and Conductor of the Trinity Symphony Orchestra at Trinity University, Conductor of the Campanile Orchestra at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music, and Music Director of Alamo City Symphony Viva. Under Joseph’s artistic leadership, both Symphony Viva and the Trinity Symphony Orchestra were named finalists in their respective categories for the 2024 American Prize in Orchestral Performance. Winner of the 34th International Conductors Workshop and Competition (Atlanta) as well as recipient of the Audience Choice Award and Third Prize at the 2023 Los Angeles Conducting Competition, Kneer has previously led several orchestras and ensembles, including the Oberlin Chamber Players, the Mercyhurst String Ensemble and Mercyhurst Civic Orchestra, and the Brown Memorial Presbyterian Chancel Choir in Baltimore. At home in concert, ballet, and operatic repertoire, Joseph’s recent conducting engagements and collaborations include Dvořák’s Violin Concerto with Jinjoo Cho, Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy with pianist Carolyn True, Poulenc’s Gloria with the San Antonio Choral Society and his wife, soprano Lydia Beasley, a period production of Dido and Aeneas with Trinity’s Opera Workshop, a mariachi program with the award-winning ensemble Campanas de America, Symphony Viva’s ballet productions of Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf and the U.S. premiere of Eloise Gynn’s Little Red Riding Hood with Alamo City Dance Company, and several world premieres, including Roger Zare’s commissioned work Neowise in May 2021. In demand as a guest conductor and competition judge, Joseph leads a full slate of concerts and ballet performances during the 2024-2025 season, including complete productions of The Nutcracker and Coppélia. Conducting mentors include Larry Rachleff, Donald Schleicher, Neil Thomson, Scott Weiss, John Farrer, Howard Williams, Phillip Greenberg, Adrian Gnam, and Gregory Pritchard. Kneer’s compositions include works for voice and piano, choir, and orchestra. His commissioned work “To Hope” for a cappella chorus was premiered by the Menomonie Singers in 2023. Joseph’s orchestral holiday medley A Festival of Carols is available for purchase at Murphy Music Press, and his Rhapsodic Overture for orchestra will be premiered in November of 2024. Joseph holds a B.M. in Violin Performance from Oberlin Conservatory, an M.M. and D.M.A. in Violin Performance from the Peabody Institute, and an M.M. in Theory Pedagogy, also from Peabody. Joseph’s principal violin teachers include Mary West, Milan Vitek, Herbert Greenberg, and Violaine Melançon.

Member Bio John Koshak is Conductor and Professor Emeritus, Chapman University, and Music Director and Conductor Emeritus and holder of the Ambassador and Mrs. George L. Argyros Music Director's Chair of the Orange County Youth Symphony Orchestra. His leadership of the OCYSO established the orchestra as one of the prominent youth orchestras in the United States and has brought national attention to the arts in Orange County. He recently completed his thirty-two year tenure at Chapman University where he served as Director of Orchestras and Instrumental Music. At the university Professor Koshak was responsible for building Chapman's nationally prominent orchestra program and one of the nation's leading undergraduate conductor training programs in orchestral conducting. To honor his achievements and contributions, Chapman University recognized John Koshak as Conductor and Professor Emeritus and established the John Koshak Visiting Professorship. The university also established the John Koshak Practice Studio in Oliphant Hall, the newest music building on the Chapman University campus. While conducting and teaching in Europe, Professor Koshak received recognition by the United States Government, which granted him the Superior Performance Award for his work in Germany. He and his orchestras have twice received the ASCAP Award from the American Symphony Orchestra League for the performance of American music. At Chapman University, Professor Koshak received the Faculty of the Year Award from the Chapman Alumni Association for his outstanding teaching and conducting. Arts Orange County recognized his music and arts leadership by giving him their prestigious Artistic Visionary Award for lifetime achievement in the arts. He is the author of the conducting book, The Conductor's Role: Preparation for Individual Study, Rehearsal and Performance that is now in its 5th edition. Professor Koshak received his Bachelor of Music degree from The Pennsylvania State University, his Master's degree from Columbia University, and his Conducting Diploma from the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria. He serves as Chair of the Mentoring Committee of the Conductors Guild.

Bruce Kotowich

Member Bio Bruce J. G. Kotowich is Associate Professor of Music and Director of Choirs at the University of Windsor where he directs the University of Windsor Chamber Choir and University Singers. In addition to directing these choral ensembles, he teaches conducting. Dr. Kotowich is also the Chorus Master for the Windsor Symphony Orchestra and Artistic Director of the Windsor Classic Chorale. Dr. Kotowich completed his Doctor of Musical Arts in Choral Conducting at the College-Conservatory of Music, University of Cincinnati where he also received his Master of Music degree. He received his Associateship of Music in Vocal Performance from the Royal Conservatory of Music, Toronto, and a Bachelor of Music and a Bachelor of Education from the University of Manitoba. He is a recipient of numerous awards and honours including awards from the Canada Arts Council, and the Manitoba Arts Council. He has conducted the Manitoba Provincial Senior High Honour Choir, Manitoba Provincial Jazz Choir, the South Dakota North Region All-State Choir, the Illinois Music Educators’ Association District 8 Honor Choir and has conducted and judged numerous other festival and conference choirs. Dr. Kotowich has presented at the Iowa Choral Directors’ Association Summer Conference, the National Convention of the American Choral Directors’ Association (Dallas 2013 and Salt Lake City 2015), North Central ACDA Regional Conferences, and the NDSU Symposium: Music of the Americas. Dr. Kotowich is published in the Choral Research Memorandum Series through Chorus America, and is the editor of a choral music series for Alliance Publishing. He has toured throughout North America, Europe and China with his choirs.

Alexandra Kovatch

Member Bio Alexandra Kovatch currently serves as the Orchestra Director at Drury University in Springfield, Missouri. She frequently guest conducts with the Kansas City Civic Orchestra and the Sedalia Symphony Orchestra. Previous positions also include Director of the Missouri State University Repertory Ensemble and Graduate Assistant Conductor of the Missouri State University Symphony. By attending symposiums and studying with various accomplished professionals, Alexandra strives to continually sharpen her conducting skills. She has studied with esteemed directors: Diane Wittry, Anna Edwards, Gary Lewis, Clif Evans, and Donald Schleicher. In 2019, she was a conducting fellow for the Allentown Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Diane Wittry. Involved in the digital conducting community, she has participated in webinars with JoAnn Faletta, Leonard Slatkin, Sarah Ioannides and Peter Fender. As a performer, Alexandra has played at the American Harp Society National Conference (2016), the Young Artists’ Harp Seminar, and the Missouri Philharmonic Orchestra. Alexandra completed a Bachelor of Music from Washburn University in Harp Performance with Erin Wood. She then completed a Master of Music in Orchestral Conducting from Missouri State University with Dr. Christopher Kelts. She grew up in Bridgewater, CT where she studied harp with Wendy Kerner.
