Member Bio Recipient of the esteemed 2023 Emerging Professional Award by the Association of California Symphony Orchestras (ACSO), Raphaela Lacerda is an accomplished and engaging orchestra conductor with a deep passion for music that resonates across borders, delighting audiences worldwide. ​Born in São Paulo, Brazil, Maestra Lacerda’s journey in classical music has been marked by remarkable achievements. She has conducted renowned orchestras in Brazil and the United States, including the Minas Gerais Philharmonic Orchestra (OFMG), São Paulo State Symphony Orchestra (OSESP), São Paulo State Youth Orchestra (OJESP), Santo André Symphony Orchestra (OSSA), Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra (BPO), and the San Bernardino Symphony Orchestra (SBSO). In 2025, Maestra Lacerda was appointed Resident Conductor of the San Bernardino Symphony Orchestra (SBSO), where she is now in her third season. Andrea LaFranzo

Member Bio Andrea LaFranzo Music Director and Founder Conductor and cellist Andrea LaFranzo has served the Chicago area for over 20 years as a performer and teacher. Andrea received her degree in cello performance from The Boston Conservatory. She has performed in a number of ensembles, including the National Symphony Orchestra, Boston Civic Orchestra, Quincy Symphony, New England Philharmonic, and Illinois Chamber Symphony. Additional, Mrs. LaFranzo has served as guest conductor for several Boston ensembles, focusing on collaboration in premieres of new works. Andrea made her solo debut on the Concert Hall Stage of the Kennedy Center in Washington DC performing with the National Symphony SMI Orchestra. Mrs. LaFranzo has dedicated a great deal of her life and career to music education both with our youth and with adult learners. She has a large cello studio in Warrenville and Elburn where students have gone on to successful music careers of their own, or have continued a life-long relationship with their instrument and music. Andrea presently directs the Fox Valley Youth Orchestra, and is principal cellist of the Fox Valley Orchestra. She has newly been appointed adjunct instructor of strings at Aurora University, directing the AU String Ensemble.

Dr. Ching-Chun Lai

Member Bio Conductor Ching-Chun Lai has held the post of Director of Orchestras and Associate Professor of Music at the Crane School of Music, State University of New York at Potsdam since 2011. During her tenure, the Crane Symphony Orchestra has advanced swiftly in both quality of performance and reputation. The orchestra has performed in prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. In Potsdam (NY), Dr. Lai appears annually in Potsdam’s traditional holiday “Candlelight Concert”, broadcast nationwide by PBS. As part of Crane’s educational mission, Dr. Lai and the Orchestra tour regularly throughout the Northeastern United States. Possessing a wide range of symphonic repertoire, Dr. Lai has worked with professional orchestras in various settings, such as the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, Buffalo Chamber Players, Gstaad Festival Orchestra (Gstaad Menuhin Festival, Switzerland), Madison Bach Musicians, New Symphony Orchestra (Bulgaria), Richmond Symphony Orchestra, and the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. In the course of her conducting career, Dr. Lai has performed in Jordan Hall in Boston, Overture Center and Music Hall in Madison (Wisconsin), and Chung-Hsin Concert Hall in Taiwan. She has prepared the orchestra and served as assistant/cover conductor for Gunther Schuller, JoAnn Falletta, and André Raphel, as well as Christof Perick, Larry Rachleff, and Duain Wolfe in the Lougheed-Kofoed Festival of the Arts. Dr. Lai has also collaborated with renowned artists, such as the Berlin Philharmonic Woodwind Quintet, percussionist Aiyun Huang, bassist Barry Green. With her deep interest in opera and new music, Dr. Lai has conducted the world premiere of Maura Bosch’s opera Art and Desire, a University of Wisconsin-Madison commission, as well as Jerry Hui’s comic opera Wired for Love. She has also worked for opera productions of Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande, Donizetti’s Don Pasquale, L’elisir d’amore, and Maria Stuarda, Handel’s Alcina, Massenet’s Thaïs, and Britten’s Turn of the Screw. A great success, the performances of Bach’s St. Matthew Passion with the Madison Bach Musicians were described in Isthmus as “consistently excellent, from the opening triple-chorus to the final double chorus, while the harmonized chorales were soaring anthems of faith.” She has also collaborated with the Contemporary Chamber Ensemble at University of Wisconsin-Madison, and was a founding member of the group, New Muse. With these dynamic musicians, Dr. Lai undertook several significant projects including fully-staged performances of Eight Songs for a Mad King by Peter Maxwell Davies, and performances of Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire. Dr. Lai made her conducting debut at the age of 19 with Taiwan’s National Cheng Kung University Wind Ensemble and was appointed conductor of that ensemble soon after her first engagement.

Member Bio James Lamb (b. 1961, Mt. Clemens, Mich.) is an American composer and audio engineer. Growing up in North Hollywood, the sounds of West Coast jazz were his introduction to music. James studied the trumpet under instruction from Los Angeles’ finest musicians, and was awarded a full scholarship to California State University at Northridge’s School of Music. After graduation, James joined the Navy and went on to perform in concerts throughout the Pacific Northwest as a musician in a Navy band. In the mid 1980s, he became arranger, performer, and leader of a Naval band which toured the Orient, Asia, and Australia. In 1991 James left the Navy and moved to New York City to become a freelance artist. Credits included performances at Lincoln Center, the New Jersey Pops Orchestra, the Tavern on the Green, and conducting the New Jersey All Star Big Band. The highlight of his stay in New York was assuming the position of Music Director/Conductor of the Great American Songbook Orchestra. Performances that included a critically acclaimed Carnegie Hall debut, the Williamson Center for the Performing Arts, and the Harman Center further defined his talent as a conductor. James has been in the music and audio industry for over 30 years, previously with long tenures at Apogee Sound and Digigram prior to founding Point Source Audio. Aside from his business roles in the industry, James continues to nurture his passion for music performance and composition as a regular volunteer with the National Guard band.

Jonathan D Lane

Member Bio Presently Artists Director and the conductor of the Westwood Ensemble, Jonathan Lane enjoys a career as a conductor, double bass player, and music educator. Born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona, he started music in a public-school music program playing bass. He has an undergraduate degree in Music Education from Arizona State University. His Master’s Degree is in Double Bass performance from the University of Michigan. Additional education includes a Summer Fellowship at Northwestern in Chicago and numerus conducting and orchestra education workshops. Mr. Lane has taught elementary through college music for over 35 years. He was orchestra director at Shawnee Mission East High School for 31 years where he also taught middle school. In that time, the SM East orchestra performed as an Honor Orchestra at; Chicago Mid-West Band and Orchestra Clinic, Music Educator National Conference (MENC), the American String Teachers National (ASTA) convention and Kansas Music Educators Association conference. He has also been a guest clinician and given talks at the Mid- West Band and Orchestra clinic, Missouri Music Teachers Association and ASTA. He has also published articles and the ASTA magazine and the Instrumentalist. He is a contributor to the GIA series of books “Teaching Music Through Performance in Orchestra”. Mr. Lane has been on the faculty of many summer music camps including the Fort Hays summer music camp. ​ Jon Lane is active as a professional double bass player, teacher, and orchestra clinician for KC Strings. He keeps a private bass studio in the Kansas City area. Former students have gone on the top music schools like Indiana University and Juilliard, some have gone on to play in the Hong Kong and the Wichita Symphonies. He has 3 grown children, one granddaughter he also plays tennis and does yoga.

Elijah Langille

Member Bio Elijah Langille is a graduate of Gordon College, where he received his Bachelor of Music in Music Education. He studied trumpet with Fred Sienkiewicx, current principal trumpet player of the Jackson Symphony Orchestra. After graduation, Elijah continued his music education, studying conducting with Michael Ellis Ingram, the Korrepetitor, and Kapellmeister of the Mecklenburg State Theater in Schwerin, Germany. He was selected to be a fellow at the Carter-Glennon International Masterclass, studying with renowned conducting pedagogue Markand Thakar. He has been with South Shore Conservatory since 2014. Elijah is the Music Director of the SSC Youth Orchestra. He is an avid educator and conductor throughout Massachusetts, currently teaching Orchestra at New Bedford High School, and is the organist at Christ Church Parish, Plymouth. He sings with the Tanglewood Festival Choir, performing at venues such as Boston’s Symphony Hall, Carnegie Hall, and the Koussevitzky Music Shed, under prominent conductors such as Andris Nelsons, Keith Lockhart, and Bramwell Tovey. Recently, Elijah conducted the Moravian Philharmonic Orchestra in Olomouc Czech Republic, studying under prominent Russian conductor Alim Shakh. He also was a guest conductor with the Parkway Concert Orchestra in 2018 and conducted the Junior SEMSBA Orchestra in 2017 and the Senior SEMSBA Orchestra in 2016. He studies conducting with Michael Ellis Ingram, the Korrepetitor, and Kapellmeister of the Mecklenburg State Theater in Schwerin, Germany. He has been with SSC since 2014.

Ms. Susan Larson

Member Bio Susan Larson is the founder and artistic director of the Newark-Granville Youth Symphony. From 2006 to 2010 Ms. Larson was Director of Orchestras for the Newark City Schools in Newark, Ohio. In 2009 her string orchestra, the Newark High School Sinfonia, was awarded first runner up for the National Orchestra Cup at Lincoln Center. This honor earned her orchestra a front page story in the New York Times and an invitation to the White House. The Newark-Granville Youth Symphony was chosen to perform at the John F Kennedy Center in 2011 and for the Ohio Music Educators Association Convention in 2009. Susan previously taught for 15 years as Director of Orchestras for the Bexley City School District, during which time her orchestras also won national recognition and invitations to perform at the White House, London, England, and at international orchestra festivals. The Bexley Elementary Honors Orchestra and Middle School Orchestras, under the direction of Ms. Larson, were also chosen to perform for the Ohio Music Educators Association Convention in 1994 and 1998. Ms. Larson has been a clinician and conductor for school ensembles throughout Ohio. She is on the board of the Ohio String Teachers Association and is a member of the National Conductors Guild, the Ohio Music Educators Association and the Suzuki Association of the Americas. Susan currently is a violin, viola and chamber music instructor for the Denison University Suzuki Program. She has also served as conductor of Women in Music Symphony Orchestra and as music director for productions at Otterbein College. As an active professional violinist, Susan has performed with the Akron Symphony Orchestra, Canton Symphony Orchestra, Ohio Light Opera, Westerville Civic Symphony, the Blossom Music Festival, and the Si Yo Chamber Music Society. She has also performed on stage with Barry Manilow, Barry White, the Electric Light Orchestra, the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, The Moody Blues, and Gene Bertoncini. Ms. Larson is currently a member of the Newark-Granville Symphony Orchestra. Susan Larson earned her BS in Music Education and violin performance at Kent State University, with violin studies under Ma Si-Hon and Stephanie Sant’Ambrosio. Her graduate work has been at The Ohio State University and the University of Wisconsin.
