Mr. Peter Shannon

Work Phone
Member Bio he Irish conductor Peter Shannon aspires to prove to others that orchestral music can transform communities. Innovative and tireless in his outreach, Shannon embodies the new and growing role of music director. He works to reshape and re-imagine what orchestras are and how they serve their communities both musically and personally. Beginning his musical career as a professional singer and organist, Peter’s performances focus on the singing aspect of the orchestra. Phrasing and articulation coupled with expressive powerful playing are signatures of his concerts. His performances are an eclectic mix of his Irish fun-loving personality, his strict German training, and his decade plus experiences of living in the USA. 2020/2021 is Shannon’s seventh year as Artistic Director and Conductor of the Jackson Symphony in Jackson, Tennessee. He was the first Artistic Director and Conductor of the Savannah Philharmonic, in Savannah Georgia, from 2008 to 2018, before deciding to relocate with his family to his native Ireland. He commutes regularly to the USA and mainland Europe to conduct. During his tenure with both orchestras, Shannon broadened the musical landscape stimulating unprecedented artistic and financial growth of the organizations. As a builder and orchestral architect, Shannon was tasked in 2007 with the forming of the Savannah Philharmonic orchestra and Chorus after the previous symphony went bankrupt. Under his tenure as Artistic Director, with much effort from the board and several executive directors, the orchestra has grown to a budget of almost two million dollars. In the first three years since his arrival with the Jackson symphony, with board support, the musicians’ earning have raised by 70%. The son of a physician, Shannon hails from a long-line of medical professionals. Combining the performing arts with the healing arts, he has developed performance programs for cancer center patients including children receiving inpatient care and individuals in hospice care. In collaboration with physicians and healthcare professionals, Shannon has spearheaded projects using Music and Mindfulness, which has trained musicians to work as healers through a specially developed curriculum focusing on communicating with compassion. He has adapted Mozart’s The Magic Flute, specifically for sick children. A 2015 article in Symphony Magazine drew international attention to this important initiative performed by the Savannah Philharmonic. Recognizing that violent crime continues to challenge many cities, Shannon, working together with the board leadership of the Savannah Philharmonic created and developed ‘Philharmonic in the Streetz’, a radically diverse collaboration between the orchestra musicians and the most at-risk youth in the community. This program drew significant attention from the City of Savannah and became a catalyst for broadening the reach of the orchestra.

Mark Shapiro

Work Phone
Member Bio Mark Shapiro is an “insightful conductor (who) draws subtle and dynamic playing” (The New York Times) from his musicians. He offers “spirit, flexibility and sensitivity in his conducting” (The Rutland Herald) of orchestras, choruses and opera, and is equally at home as a speaker, presenter and teacher. He has been in the vanguard of conductors engaging in relevant and vital ways with musicians, audiences and communities. A six-time winner of an ASCAP Programming Award while at the helm of three different ensembles over a two-decade span, Shapiro is Music Director of The Prince Edward Island Symphony and The Cecilia Chorus of New York, which performs an annual series in Carnegie Hall. He is Artistic Director of Cantori New York, which holds the unusual distinction of having appeared at all five major halls at Lincoln Center. The New York Times has singled out Shapiro’s “spirit of adventure,” “virtuosity and assurance,” and the “uncommon polish” of his music-making, and the New Jersey Star-Ledger has characterized his artistic leadership as “erudite and far-reaching.” His repertoire interests are wide-ranging, embracing new music and standard repertoire from all over the globe, from the Middle Ages to the present day, as well as crossover (with popular Canadian artists Lennie Gallant, Catherine MacLellan, David Myles and The Paper Lions). He devises original programs interweaving music and spoken word; and he pioneered a highly successful model juxtaposing classical masterworks and popular artists. A dedicated advocate of women composers, Shapiro has particularly championed the work of Dame Ethel Smyth, conducting the long overdue New York premieres of her Mass in D and The Prison, both in Carnegie Hall. A skilled linguist as well as a fluent musician, Shapiro has conducted multiple opera productions with Juilliard Vocal Arts, and has conducted opera with American Opera Projects, the Center for Contemporary Opera, Encompass New Opera Theatre, Hofstra Opera Theater, Mannes Opera, Opera Theater Rutgers, Underworld Opera, and the Opera Company of Middlebury. He is a frequent guest conductor for the Nova Sinfonia in Halifax. Shapiro is proud to have conducted the Carnegie Hall debuts of international opera stars Julia Bullock, Ryan Speedo Green, Jennifer Rowley, William Guanbo Su, and to have collaborated with outstanding musical talents including Harolyn Blackwell, Sasha Cooke, Miranda Cuckson, Marni Nixon, the Prism Saxophone Quartet and Nadia Sirota, among many others. He has been privileged to work with Tony Award winners Maryann Plunkett and Stephen Spinella, Obie Award winner Kathleen Chalfant, American Ballet Theatre and others. Shapiro has had performances and interviews on radio stations WNYC and WQXR, as well as on Sirius radio, and was heard on PBS leading the orchestral soundtrack for Ric Burns’s special on New York City. He has recorded for the Albany, Arsis, Newport Classics and PGM labels. His recording of Frank Martin’s oratorio Le
